History

Marking Manhattan School of Music’s 90th Anniversary, we pay tribute this season to the style and sophistication of the great music born in our magnificent city, from Irving Berlin to Miles Davis to Leonard Bernstein and beyond.

A sampling of highlights:

  • A significant orchestral series with works by Bernstein, Barber, Copland, Gershwin, and Danielpour
  • Songs from “The Manhattan Songbook,” sung by the peerless baritone Thomas Hampson
  • A performance by the Opera Theater of Kurt Weill’s Street Scene, where Broadway meets Grand Opera
  • And, to take us to the present moment, a series of premiere performances of newly commissioned works by MSM faculty and alumni.

A vibrant jazz series is planned with repertoire by Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, and John Lewis, as well as works reflecting the monumental legacy of Afro-Cuban composers working in Manhattan. In February, we salute the inimitable Miles Davis with a three-day Jazz Summit. Several community events and family concerts are planned to celebrate the music written in MSM’s immediate neighborhood of Morningside Heights and Harlem.

All of Manhattan will be our stage as we place performance groups in major museums and cultural institutions, grand public spaces, public schools, and corporate headquarters. In February we will make our mark with three celebratory concerts in Carnegie’s Zankel Hall, Manhattan’s new venue for adventurous music. A February 14 concert will feature Zero Gravity, the new ensemble of the Contemporary Music Performance Program launched this season at MSM. On February 16th, violinist Pinchas Zukerman will perform with some of his most talented students, who have been chosen for the Performance Program that bears his name. And finally, on February 20, the Miles Davis Jazz Summit will culminate with a concert in Zankel Hall.

Manhattan School of Music's 90th Anniversary Season is supported in part by the following:

  • Steinway & Sons
  • Christie's
  • Panasonic
  • NewsCorp
  • 96.3 WQXR
  • Harlem Arts Alliance
