Scholarships and Fellowships

Manhattan School of Music is committed to giving deserving students undergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships to enable them to pursue an outstanding education. On an annual basis, the School spends approximately $9 million on scholarships. Scholarship gifts go far beyond providing essential financial support for students. These gifts make a significant difference in the life of the institution, enabling Manhattan School of Music to recruit top candidates and recognize artistic excellence regardless of financial need. Named scholarships (for undergraduates) and fellowships (for graduate students) are either endowed, to provide permanent support, or are expendable, to offer immediate aid. They may be named for the donor or in honor or memory of someone.

Establishing a Named Expendable Scholarship or Fellowship

An expendable scholarship or fellowship may be established with a minimum gift of $12,500, pledged for two consecutive years, and may be designated to a specific area of study. Donors are invited to their scholarship recipients’ performances and receive annual updates on their academic and artistic progress.

Establishing a Named Endowed Scholarship or Fellowship

Endowed scholarships and fellowships, which can be established with a minimum gift of $50,000, will exist in perpetuity and continue to provide essential financial support to future generations of young artists. The principal is permanently invested and the income it earns is awarded to students as scholarship money. At the typical payout rate of 5 percent, an endowment of $50,000, fully vested for one year, produces $2,500 a year in income to be used for scholarship. Donors or named designees of endowed scholarships and fellowships are invited to their scholarship recipients’ performances and receive annual updates on their academic and artistic progress.

“I thank you very much for your generous donation. In this profession, many hold close to their hearts the belief that the music alone keeps them going, but I think it’s also the people involved in music (those who support through donations and their attendance at concerts). Your donation will help me to better my skills and share and spread our music to people all over the world.”
