Manhattan School of Music embarked on a $2.4 million campaign for the purchase and maintenance of a fleet of new pianos. Seventeen new Steinway pianos were delivered to the School in August 2010, heralded by two trumpeters playing a fanfare and covered by Michael Schulman in The New Yorker. Thus far the School has purchased more than $800,000 worth of pianos, leaving a balance of $1.8 million yet to be raised.
Pianos are used in every aspect of musical training, not the least of which is in the Piano Department. At MSM, Piano Department Chair Marc Silverman leads one of the most distinguished piano faculties in the world. Our world-renowned piano faculty and alumni include Steinway artists Arkady Aronov, David Dubal, Daniel Epstein, Kirill Gerstein, Vijay Iyer, Jon Klibonoff, Phillip Kawin, Solomon Mikowsky, Joanne Polk, Heasook Rhee, Ted Rosenthal, André-Michel Schub, James Tocco, and the late Eugene Istomin and Constance Keene.
The School has been fortunate to receive support from a number of generous donors, including leadership gifts from an alumna and her husband (who wish to remain anonymous), Jason and Deborah McManus, Cecilia and John Farrell, the Goodman Family, and Solomon Gadles Mikowsky.
