Summer English Study

SES is an eight-week ESL (English as a Second Language) program for musicians, which is held from June 30 through August 22. Students take classes Monday through Friday for four hours a day. Each day, students attend two 90-minute classes with approximately ten students per class and one 50-minute class with approximately two students per class. There are no classes on Saturdays or Sundays.

During SES, students will improve their basic English skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. One class each day is designed to help students learn some of the special English vocabulary of music theory and music history. Music theory and music history are two of the most difficult subjects at music conservatories for students who are learning English.

SES also helps undergraduate students prepare for the humanities classes that are required of all BM degree candidates. Humanities classes are especially difficult for students who have never studied in Western countries.

In addition to attending classes, SES students have one-to-one meetings with current MSM students known as peer educators. Spending time with peer educators—talking, watching a movie, going out for a snack—gives you the opportunity to practice English conversation and to learn more about living in New York City.

SES teachers and peer educators are all native English speakers. They speak only English in the SES classes and meetings; this is a level of English immersion that you may not have experienced in your home country. It is the best way to prepare to study in America.

The MSM faculty and staff understand your need to keep practicing during the summer. SES students can use MSM practice rooms. Students who live in the dorm have additional practice rooms available to them in Andersen Hall. In past summers, some SES students have arranged to take private lessons and some students have even given performances during the summer.
