The management of the School believes that committee work is important in the process of encouraging communication, facilitating policymaking, and providing a forum for the exchange of ideas between diverse constituents at Manhattan School of Music.

The following standing committees are found on this page, followed by brief descriptions of their mandates:

Archives & Document Retention Committee

The Archives and Document Retention Committee will identify materials that possess temporary or permanent value, whether for operational, academic, fiscal, historical, artistic, or legal reasons. These materials may be in a variety of formats, physical or electronic. The Committee will develop and initiate guidelines for the selection, collection, organization, preservation, access, and retrieval of identified materials, as well as for their eventual disposal where appropriate.

Admission & Scholarship Committee

The Admissions Committee reviews and evaluates applications for admission consideration to Manhattan School of Music based on admission criteria and current School circumstance. Further information can be found on the Admission page of this site.

The Scholarship Committee reviews all applications received from students accepted for admission as well as applications from students already enrolled. Scholarships are applied toward the cost of tuition and are considered renewable, provided the student meets all established criteria. Further information can be found on the Financial Aid page of this site.

Advisory Committee on Campus Safety

The Advisory Committee on Campus Safety shall review current campus security policies and procedures and make recommendations for their improvement. It shall specifically review current policies and procedures for educating the campus community about sexual assault and personal safety and crime prevention, reporting sexual assaults and dealing with victims during investigations, referring complaints to appropriate authorities, counseling victims, and responding to inquiries from concerned persons.

The committee shall report, in writing, to the president on its findings and recommendations at least once each academic year, and such report shall be available upon request.

Campus Pride Committee

Campus Pride Committee’s mission is to help create within our students, faculty, and staff an awareness of and pride in our School's campus. The committee’s areas of interest include: developing policies and procedures that describe and ensure the care of our facilities and the safety and security of our Manhattan School of Music community; formulating a School-wide campaign that instills identification with and respect for our educational and work environment; creating communication vehicles that inform and educate students, faculty, and staff of these policies and procedures; pursuing opportunities for ongoing campus improvement; and establishing implementation strategies and follow-up enforcement actions.

Committee for Academic Progress

The Committee for Academic Progress meets at the end of each semester to review the transcripts of all students. Special care is devoted to students who receive substandard grades. The Committee may recommend a letter of concern, letter of warning, probation, forced leave of absence, or dismissal.

Committee for Educational Effectiveness

This committee reviews and assesses past procedures and creates new ways to improve educational effectiveness. Additionally, the committee focuses on the following objectives: to initiate a proactive approach to managing the ever-changing demands regarding institutional issues and their effect on the School’s mission and goals; to understand concerns and develop solutions; to increase communication, trust, and cooperation between faculty and administration and to build community within the institution; to support an artistic and diverse community-centered value system that reflects the School’s mission; and to develop the necessary supportive resources for both faculty development and student learning.

Council of Chairs

The Council of Chairs creates a forum for open discussion, supportive collaboration between educational departments and those departments and the administration, encourages faculty involvement, and fosters the educational and artistic goals of the School.

Curriculum Committee

The Curriculum Committee deals with new course proposals, the development of new academic programs, and the review and revision of the current curricula. Actions by the Curriculum Committee are referred to the Chief Financial Officer and the President for final approval.

Distance Learning Advisory Committee

The Distance Learning Advisory Committee, comprised of faculty members and senior administration representatives, is directed to advise and support the continuing advancement and development of the distance learning program, initiatives, and technology in alignment with Manhattan School of Music's goals, objectives, and mission.

Doctoral Committee

The Doctoral Committee is directed to set policy and requirements for graduation, design curriculum, approve thesis proposals, and review and act on student petitions pertaining to the Doctor of Musical Arts degree program.

Emergency Management Committee

The Emergency Management Committee was charged to develop and implement a comprehensive Emergency Management Plan (The Plan) that will be activated in the event of natural or man-made disasters, actual or threatened. Policies and procedures developed in this Plan are incorporated into existing School documents where appropriate, published on the School’s Web site and in disseminated in hard copy appropriate constituents. The Committee continues to meet as necessary to consider current situations that may impact the School community and updates the Plan accordingly. Enrollment Management Committee

The Enrollment Management Committee’s goal is to evaluate and improve the general effectiveness of student-related administrative processes in order to facilitate the student’s educational experience and developmental growth. The committee assesses current student-related services, explores ideas for improvement and/or innovation, and provides a forum for discussion and resolution of issues pertaining to student-administration interaction. The committee addresses issues as directed by the President. These issues might include, but not be limited to, the following: efficient and timely communication between administrative offices, orientation, student career preparation, space usage, registration, residence life, retention/attrition, and communication between the administration and students.

Ethics Committee

The Ethics Committee hears and mediates complaints regarding alleged violations of the School’s ethics code as printed in the Faculty Handbook.

Faculty Council

The Faculty Council acts as a forum for the expression of faculty concerns and proactive ideas. It brings these concerns to the attention of the administration with the goal of arriving at a mutually satisfactory outcome.

Interstaff Committee

The Interstaff Committee improves implementation of the School’s mission and programs by developing community through staff interaction and communication at all levels and supporting the leadership of staff members. The committee provides a forum where proactive ideas are openly expressed and discussed. Interactive meetings, workshops, and sponsored events are examples of methods used to support the committee’s goals.

Negotiating Committee

The Negotiating Committee’s mission is to engage the administration and the Faculty Council in direct negotiations on matters determined by both parties to be of general concern.

Quodata Committee

The Jenzabar QX Suite (“Quodata”) Administrative and Implementation Committee’s mission is to identify, analyze, and implement existing and potential Jenzabar application changes and standards. The committee identifies the paths and methods of interdepartmental communication required for this application, recognizes and approves reporting needs and formats, and manages training protocols.

Scheduling Committee

The goals of the Scheduling Committee are to ensure regular, adequate space for all core curriculum courses according to fluctuating annual need and to create better schoolwide understandings of general space needs and constraints through ongoing dialogue at weekly meetings.

Special Projects Committee

The purpose of the Special Projects Committee is to review proposals for nonacademic events submitted by faculty and staff for consideration as official Manhattan School of Music event. Examples of the type of proposed events are collaborations with other institutions or organizations, recording projects, and requests for our Manhattan School of Music orchestras to accompany non-Manhattan School of Music musicians.

Systems Management and Standards Committee

The Systems Management and Standards Committee’s mission is to identify, analyze, and assess existing and potential technology systems and standards.
The committee identifies the paths and methods of inter-departmental communication that support technologies used at the School and makes recommendations for their creation or enhancement; defines, promotes, and enforces technology standards; identifies and approves document templates and formats and delegates responsibilities to departments for the creation and proper use of document templates; maintains oversight of School’s core technical applications; and is responsible for user training.

Web Site Committee

The Web Site Committee’s mission is to oversee the design, development, maintenance, and enhancement of the School’s public Web site and all pertinent policies and procedures.

The duties of the committee are to make decisions about the design, structure, and content of the School’s Web site; approve the appointment of the Technical Manager and Content Manager of the Web site; write and disseminate information about the Web site to the School community; propose and approve Web site-related procedures; review requests by faculty, staff, or students for technological enhancements to the Web site; authorize access to Web site files or secured management features of the site to individuals within the School community in situations when the Technical Manager is not present to grant such authorization; examine and approve work product submitted by internal staff; and evaluate and report on the functionality, reliability, and efficacy of the Web site for the School’s constituencies.

In addition, the committee approves the engagement of vendors of Web site-related technology and services and approves work product submitted by external vendors, authorizes access to Web site files or secured management features by individuals or organizations outside the School community (in situations when the Technical Manager is not present to grant such authorization), and undertakes strategic planning for future Web site development and modification.
