Prescreening:

The instruments listed below require the submission of a prescreen recording (CD only, in a standard plastic jewel case) by the December 1st application deadline. Applicants must mail the CD directly to the Office of Admission. CD's must be clearly labeled with your full name, instrument and degree. Please make sure to include a list of the repertoire performed on the CD. We suggest that you attach the list to the inside of the CD case.

Please click on the instrument to view the prescreening requirements:

Recordings do not need to be professional or studio recordings. A CD with good audio quality is sufficient.

Once the CD is received by the Office of Admission, it becomes part of the application record and cannot be returned. Composition applicants wishing to have their scores returned must include a postage paid envelope.

Please note that applications received without a recording (or a recording and compositions for Classical Composition applicants) will be considered incomplete, and the applicant will not be considered for an invitation to a live audition.

Dates/Times of Live Auditions:

Approximately one month before your live audition, you will be sent your specific audition date and time by email. Please note that audition dates and times are assigned by the Office of Admission and are not flexible. Certain majors require additional requirements during the live audition. They are as follows:

  • All Jazz majors (except Jazz Composition) will take a short theory test just prior to their scheduled audition time.
  • Classical Composition and Jazz Composition applicants will be scheduled for a required entrance exam and interview with the faculty during the regularly scheduled audition period.
  • Doctoral Program applicants will be scheduled for required entrance exams and an interview with the Doctoral Committee during the regularly scheduled audition period.
  • All MM and PS voice applicants invited for a live audition will be required to take a short diction assessment either before or after the audition. BM voice applicants may take the diction assessment, but it is not required.

See Dates & Deadlines for audition dates and application deadlines.

Recorded Auditions (DVD only):

Applicants residing outside North America and cello, harp, tuba and double bass applicants may either audition live in New York or opt to send a recorded DVD audition (except for composition, accompanying, and Doctoral Program applicants who must have a live audition).

  • DVD's must include all required repertoire and be clearly labeled with your full name, instrument and degree.
  • DVD's must be submitted by December 1st if prescreening is required.
  • If prescreening is not required, DVD's must be received no later than February 1st.
  • DVD's will not be returned.

Audition Repertoire:

Be sure to have all required repertoire prepared for your audition. Please refer to the Academic Department page for your major and program for specific repertoire requirements for auditioning.

Entrance Exams:

Entrance exams are required at the time of audition for classical composition, jazz composition, and Doctoral Program applicants.

Audition Results:

Provided all required materials have been received, you will be sent notification of your admission status on or about April 1st. Please be advised that a successful audition is not indicative of one's final admission status at Manhattan School of Music. An applicant's audition results are only one of many criteria used to determine admission eligibility. The Admission Committee reviews all of the materials listed in the Required Materials section, and an invitation to attend Manhattan School of Music cannot be made without them, especially such documents as: academic transcripts, transcript translations and/or academic evaluations (if applicable), and a valid TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score. Admission results are not available over the phone or by email.

Doctoral Program Applicants:

In addition to the required general application materials, all applicants to the Doctoral Program must submit three (3) recommendations from professional musicians/teachers and a writing sample from recent academic work. In addition to the audition/interview, all Doctoral Program applicants must take entrance exams in music history and theory during the audition period. Successful completion of these tests is required for admission to the Doctoral Program. All Doctoral Program applicants whose first language is not English must submit a minimum TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 100 iBT (250 computer based).
