Bobby Sanabria, Director"Cubop and Beyond" Starting in 1939 in East Harlem, Machito & The Afro-Cubans became the first band to fuse modern jazz arranging techniques with the excitement and power of authentic Afro-Cuban rhythms. By the mid-1940's, they began embracing the new harmonic advancements of Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parke which became known as bebop. With its angular melodies, blistering tempos, and new chord structures, bebop challenged the established norm of the jazz improvisers of the swing era and set a new standard of virtuosity in jazz. Jazz writer Leonard Feather tagged the new sound of Afro-Cuban rhythms fused with bebop: "cubop."
