| | | Daniel Avshalomov began his studies in Portland, Oregon. After a year abroad with Orrea Pernel and members of the Amadeus Quartet, Mr. Avshalomov pursued his B.M. and M.M. degrees at Juilliard, where for an unprecedented five years he served as principal violist of the orchestra. He was the first violist in the School’s history to be awarded the Loeb Prize for Outstanding Achievement. Mr. Avshalomov worked with William Lincer and members of the Juilliard Quartet.
Mr. Avshalomov was a founding member of the Orpheus Chamber Ensemble and principal violist for the Aspen, Tanglewood, and Spoleto Festivals as well as the Brooklyn Philharmonic, the Opera Orchestra of New York, the American Composers Orchestra, and solo violist with the Bolshoi Ballet.
Mr. Avshalomov joined the American String Quartet in 1976, performing worldwide and recently hailed by Strad as “one of the finest occupants of that chair, both instrumentally and musically, of any quartet now active.” He has been a featured performer with Da Camera of Houston, the Marin Music Festival, La Musica di Asolo, and the Aspen Festival and has given regular recitals and master classes internationally.
Mr. Avshalomov has had articles published in Notes and Strings, has several published editions of works for viola, is the subject of two articles in Strad and Classical Pulse and recently contributed a chapter to ASTA's Playing and Teaching the Viola. He performed the world premiere of Bracali’s Concerto per Viola; and has recorded on CD Three Generations Avshalomov, which was featured on NPR’s All Things Considered. Mr. Avshalomov developed Inside Passage , first presented to the New York Viola Society in 2000.
