Bassoonist, Windscape
Dr. Morelli is a faculty member in the College for the following department(s) and division(s):
| | | Frank Morelli studied with Stephen Maxym at the Manhattan and Juilliard schools of music. He was the first bassoonist to be awarded a doctorate by Juilliard.
He has over one hundred and forty recordings for major record labels to his credit, including the Mozart Bassoon Concerto with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra on the DG record label. The Orpheus CD Shadow Dances, featuring Frank Morelli, won a 2001 Grammy.
A prolific chamber musician, he has appeared with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center on numerous occasions, including one at the White House for the final state dinner of the Clinton presidency. He has performed at the Marlboro, Mostly Mozart, Spoleto, Newport, Caramoor, Grand Canyon, Orford, Norfolk, and Bridgehampton music festivals. He is a member of the Festival Chamber Music Society and Windscape, which is an ensemble in residence at Manhattan School of Music.
Chosen to succeed his teacher, Mr. Morelli also serves on the faculties of Juilliard, Mannes, and the Yale School of Music. He compiled Stravinsky: Difficult Passages for Bassoon (Boosey & Hawkes), the only bassoon excerpt book dedicated entirely to the works of Stravinsky. He is principal bassoonist of New York City Opera, Orpheus, the Brooklyn Philharmonic, and the American Composers Orchestra.
