Jamie Baum, originally from Connecticut, is a NYC-based jazz flutist/composer, recording artist/clinician and has toured extensively in the US as well as in 17 countries in Europe, South America, Asia and South Asi, performing at festivals, clubs and concert halls. Her appearances on several recordings has granted her critical praise as a leader featuring her compositions; Sight Unheard on Gunther Schuller's GM Recordings and Moving Forward, Standing Still (OmniTone) both received four stars from DownBeat Magazine.
Baum has performed with luminaries ranging from Kenny Werner, Tom Harrell, Fred Hersch, Donald Brown, Kenny Barron and Randy Brecker to Dave Douglas, Uri Caine, Paul Motian, George Russell, John Abercrombie, Mick Goodrick, V. M. Bhatt, Hakim Ludin, and Karaikudi Mani. Though focusing primarily on jazz, she has been involved in projects involving classical and new music, as well as Brazilian, Indian and Latin music, which has offered her ample opportunity to develop a strong personal style. Her jazz projects have ranged from the traditional straight-ahead to modern, original styles.
Baum’s newest CD was included in the DownBeat Boston Phoenix, Diario de Noticias (Lisbon) and Jazziz Critics Pick list, among others, for “Best CDs of 2004”. In addition, she was nominated as “Flutist of the Year” by the Jazz Journal Association in their 2005 and 2006 annual jazz awards. She has also been included in the DownBeat Critics polls every year since 1998.
She was a winner of the 2003 New Works: Creation and Presentation Award, a component of the Doris Duke/Chamber Music America Jazz Ensembles Projec, which commissions her to write new music for her septet. The recipient of the '99 International Jazz Composers Alliance/Julius Hemphill Composition Award, she has also won three NEA awards, two Meet The Composer grants, and was an awarded "Fellow" in the Massachusetts Artists Fellowship Program in composition. Jamie also won the 1996 JAZZIZ Woodwinds-On-Fire contest where she was featured in their August '96 issue and CD. Ms. Baum has had endorsement agreements with the Haynes Flute Co. and Altus Flutes.
Some of the top clubs and festivals she has performed at include the Blue Note, Sweet Rhythm, Lincoln Center Jazz’s Dizzy’s Jazz Club, Knitting Factory, Blues Alley, Pizza Express (London), RegattaBar, The Boston Globe Jazz Festival, Venezuela Jazz Festival, Jazz Yatra (India), Guelph Jazz Festival (Canada), Braga Jazz festival (Portugal), Terrassa Jazz Festival (Spain), Katmandu Jazz Festival (Nepal), Rochester Jazz Festival, Bermuda Jazz Festival, JVC and Friehoffer’s Jazz Festivals and the Kennedy Center Mary Lou Williams Jazz Festival. She was chosen in 1999 – 2003 by the U.S. State Department/ Kennedy Center Jazz Ambassador Program to tour extensively under their auspices.
Despite Baum's busy performance schedule, she has been an active teacher through private instruction at The New School (NYC) and at LIU as well as her work as a clinician. Her resume includes an extensive list of high schools and colleges (nationally and internationally) from New England Conservatory of Music to Houston's High School for the Performing Arts where she has taught workshops, masterclasses and clinics.
Ms. Baum received her BM degree from New England Conservatory and her MM from Manhattan School of Music. She studied flute with Ransom Wilson, Robert Stallman, Hubert Laws and Keith Underwood; jazz improvisation with Richie Bierach, Dave Liebman, Jaki Byard and Charlie Banacos; and composition with Richard DeRosa and W. T. McKinley.
