American pianist Sheryl Swint Canellakis has received critical acclaim for her performances as soloist with orchestra and as a recitalist and chamber musician throughout the United States and in Europe. She has been described as “an expressive and versatile performer with a marvelous interpretive sense” (Allan Kozinn in New York), and as “a finished artist with a tremendously warm, lyrical and personal interpretation” (Warsaw).
Her outstanding success with the Baltimore Symphony under the direction of Sergiu Comissiona in the Saint-Saëns Second Concerto led to an immediate reengagement to play the Tchaikovsky Concerto. She has performed in many well-known venues, including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the United Nations, and the Aspen Music Festival.
She graduated from The Juilliard School with bachelor’s and master’s degrees as a scholarship student of Sascha Gorodnitzki, Rosina Lhevinne, and Martin Canin. She was the recipient of the Mary Duke Biddle Award at Juilliard, the Bryan Award as first-prize winner of the North Carolina Symphony Competition, and a recital award from the Concert Artists Guild. As winner of the Artists International Competition, she was presented in two recitals at Carnegie Recital Hall. . As an experienced pedagogue, Ms. Canellakis has given master classes and recitals at major universities. She has taught at Vassar College and has been a faculty member of the City University of New York at Queensborough. She has been on the Faculty of the Manhattan School of Music Precollege Division since 1989 and the College Division as a piano associate of Dr. Solomon Mikowsky since 1988.
