How to Apply
Composition Department

Listed below are the audition procedures as well as the various audition requirements for each degree level.

Prescreening Procedures

All applicants must submit their scores and recordings (CD preferred) with their application for prescreening purposes. Applicants who pass the prescreening will be invited to New York City for an entrance examination and interview.

Audition Procedures

Applicants who pass the prescreening must complete a two-part examination/audition taking place over a two-day period. (The procedure for doctoral applicants may take as long as four days. Please see the doctoral program for more details.) Students unable to be present for all parts of the exam/interview cannot be evaluated for admission.

Part I: Entrance Examination

Applicants are required to take an examination lasting 3 hours. The test covers dictation, sight-singing, harmony, counterpoint, set theory, orchestration, analysis of musical examples, and composition exercises in fugue and melody harmonization.

Part II: Audition/Interview

On one of the two days following the written exam, each applicant will have an individual interview with members of the composition faculty (15 minutes for undergraduate and graduate applicants and 20 minutes for doctoral). Particular attention will be paid to the overnight composition assignment. While demonstration of instrumental proficiency is not required, it is encouraged.

Undergraduate Composition Submissions Requirements

Submit scores of original compositions (maximum of three). Performance recordings, if available, should be included for any and all scores. The submission of recordings is greatly encouraged, though not required. Do not submit MIDI realizations or video recordings.

Graduate, Professional Studies and Doctoral Composition Submissions Requirements

Applicants should submit a maximum of three scores. One of these must be an orchestral work.

NOTE: MM, PS or doctoral applications submitted without an orchestral work will not be considered.

The three works submitted should demonstrate a variety of insturmentations, forms, and genres. At least one submitted score must be accompanied by a recording. MIDI realizations of acoustic works cannot be considered.
