The Piano Technical Services department is committed to the continual
improvement of the quality of our piano inventory. The School employs
four full-time technicians to tune, maintain, restore, and rebuild
the School’s 165 Steinway pianos.
Owing to the substantial amount of use our pianos receive, in addition
to climatic issues, students and faculty are urged to take steps
to promote the best care possible for our piano inventory. Such
steps include closing windows when leaving a room (even if you did
not open them), closing window blinds to prevent the direct sunlight
from hitting the pianos, and (in the case of studio or performance
pianos) making sure the door is locked when you leave. You are also
urged to report any significant climatic event such as a room that
seems excessively hot or cold.
A student may occasionally be asked to relinquish use of a room
so that the piano may receive tuning or repairs. We apologize in
advance for this inconvenience; however, we cannot maintain such
a huge piano inventory without displacing the users from time to
time.
Procedure for Requesting Piano Repair
The Piano Report Forms are located at the main security desk and
the Anderson Residence Hall security desk. These forms are a critical
part of the communication between students and faculty and the departmental
technicians. Students and faculty should fill out these forms whenever
they detect a problem with any piano in the School.
