Each
season a number of internationally renowned artists are invited
to present master classes at Manhattan School of Music. Master classes
give students the opportunity to supplement their studies with Manhattan
School of Music studio teachers through interaction with legendary
guest performers whose insight and experience exemplify the highest
levels of musical achievement.
Our rich tradition of visiting artists goes back to the School's
beginning, when Pablo Casals and Harold Bauer were a guiding force.
Throughout the years, classes given by important artists have been
regular events, including visits by Julian Bream, Alicia de Larrocha,
Ezio Flagello, Marian McPartland, Sherrill Milnes, Yehudi Menuhin,
Birgit Nilsson, Elmar Oliveira, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Ned Rorem, Mstislav
Rostropovich, Arthur Rubinstein, Billy Taylor, Dawn Upshaw, Andre
Watts, and Pinchas Zukerman, to mention a few. Recent artists to

"Every amazing musician comes to New York, so you hear the best
concerts and have the best teachers and master classes. I play horn,
but I went to a master class with cellist Mstislav Rostropovich
because he is so famous. He has great energy, and the class was
awesome. He told stories about talking with Prokofiev and Shostakovich,
and he knows what they wanted from the music."
