MSM Summer

About MSM Summer

MSM Summer provides instruction and performance experience in instrumental music and voice for students who have completed grades 3-11 (ages 8-17).  Students will develop their musical skills and join a community of young musicians through a wide variety of musical and social activities. Former participants have hailed from across the United States and from around the world.

What Participants Will Experience

Instrumentalists and jazz vocalists will participate in various large and small ensembles, which may include string ensemble, woodwind ensemble, orchestra, jazz band, Latin jazz band, clarinet choir, flute choir, 4-hand piano, and an array of chamber groups.  All participants will have a private lesson each week with a MSM Summer faculty member. Performance opportunities will take place throughout the summer in Manhattan School of Music’s state-of-the-art recital halls and main auditorium.

The musical theater curriculum includes acting, vocal coaching, dance, and performance techniques.  All voice majors will have a weekly private lesson with a faculty member.  Singers will develop their vocal skills and dramatic interpretation, as well as gain valuable performance experience, as they rehearse and prepare for the summer’s culminating musical theater productions. Performances will be fully staged with costumes and will be presented in Manhattan School of Music’s state-of-the-art recital halls and main auditorium.

All participants will participate in theory and/or ear-training classes.  Students can also choose from a diverse array of musical and non-musical elective classes including composition, improvisation, acting, songwriting, conducting, and many more. In addition to studies with our expert faculty, they will also have the opportunity to participate in master classes given by renowned performing artists.

MSM Summer Faculty and Staff

All MSM Summer faculty are experienced educators and active performers. Many of our faculty are Manhattan School of Music alumni.

Living in a College Residence Hall

Participants ages 12-17 can opt to enroll as residential participants. Residential participants reside at Manhattan School of Music's G. Chris and SungEun Andersen Residence Hall. In addition to offering some of the best views of New York City, the modern residence hall offers participants access to superior practice facilities, air-conditioning, and 24-hour security. All residential participants are supervised by trained counselors who reside in the residence hall with the participants. Students and counselors eat meals together in the college dining hall.

Residential students have numerous opportunities to explore New York City's exciting and unique cultural offerings during supervised excursions including visits to Broadway shows, jazz clubs, concerts, museums, and parks.  They will have an opportunity to meet and develop friendships with other musically talented students through various social and recreational activities, including BBQs, informal sports, movie nights, theme days, and talent shows.
