Masters at Manhattan Online
The distance learning program at Manhattan School of Music proudly
presents Masters at Manhattan Online, a series of collaborative
master class programs that feature distinguished artist-faculty
from the School and around the world via interactive videoconferencing
technology. Notable in this program are three major collaborations:
with the Orchestral Performance Program, the Jazz Arts Program,
and the Office of the Dean of Faculty and Performance.
For the 2007–2008 academic year, distance learning programming
collaborations include The Art of Orchestral Performance: A
Videoconference Master Class Series and Manhattan on the
Rideau: A Jazz Videoconference Master Class Series.
With ten years’ experience in the field of distance learning
and as the first conservatory in the nation to utilize videoconferencing
for music education, Manhattan School of Music has been able to
refine the key elements of presenting successful master-class programs
via videoconference. In addition to giving students access to world-class
musicians and stimulating artistic perspectives, Manhattan School
of Music ensures that the quality of our videoconference transmissions
is of the highest possible standard. Many of these transmissions
take place over the advanced high-speed network of Internet2. For
further information about our programs in higher education or to
inquire about potential collaborations, please contact Christianne
Orto, assistant dean of distance learning & director of recording.
Here is a sampling of our recent programs along with comments from
some of our participants:

Learning and Jazz Arts Programs in partnership with the National

“The value of videoconferencing for teaching is obvious.
If I can’t physically be there, at least students can get

is also the dramatic effect of the medium itself which has positive
inspirational value….”

“Distance learning is a grand vehicle for future directions
in teaching and performing…as we try to develop opportunities
