Curriculum (in formation, as of January 7)

The Art of Singing

  • Two private (one-hour) voice lessons per week with the preeminent MSM voice faculty (can be scheduled as four, one half hour lessons by arraignment with your assigned teacher)
  • Two private (one-hour) coachings per week.
Audition/Competition Seminar — Dona Vaughn, instructor
  • This performance class prepares singers for all aspects of auditions and competition entry.

Technique for Acting Sung Material — Carolyn Marlow, instructor

  • Developing specific technique for acting sung material, based in techniques for acting spoken material (plays), and contoured / adjusted to focus on song (art song, arias, and musical theater song).
  • The question addressed is how do you act and sing at the same time — not an easy task.
  • The seminar includes some improvisation and/or sensory exercise, the majority of the work involves singing actual material (not improvising).
  • Lyric Analysis: Applying that analysis and one’s own personal experience to a song.
  • Scene from a straight play with improv audition technique.

Improvisation / Bring Yourself to What You Sing — Rhoda Levine, instructor

  • Create your own repertoire through structured improvisation.
  • Build a higher level of collaboration with your colleagues and you composer.

Daily Performance Master Classes — (taught by members of the faculty and guest artists)

  • Students perform works prepared in the classes / seminars.

English Diction Plus — Kathryn LaBouff

  • Includes a brief phonetics overview
  • a 'hands on' non-academic, English diction class/master class series on varied repertoire
  • how to negotiate vocally through diction technique
  • an intensive, holistic, integrated approach which brings together all the elements needed in role or repertoire preparation.

Advanced Performance Seminar — Dona Vaughn, instructor

This performance class for advanced singers includes staging scenes of duets, trios, and small ensembles with extensive character study and the use of period stagecraft.

  • Cynthia Hoffmann — Alexander Technique / Vocal Performance
  • Joan Patenaude-Yarnell — "The Language of Bel Canto" — focusing on the characteristics of the Italian language through the song and operatic repertoire.

  • Ashley Putnam — German Lieder Class — emphasis on Strauss and Brahms.
  • Neil Rosenshein — “Taking the stage / Holding the public”
