Our curriculum provides the artistic and technical training expected of the aspiring professional musician,
as well as ample opportunity to perform and create. We offer the following levels
of study:
Undergraduate Studies
The undergraduate program confers the bachelor of music degree in
a major field of study through a four-year curriculum that includes
course work in musical subjects, ensemble performance, and humanities
studies.
Graduate Studies
The graduate programs consist of a major area of study, course work
in music-related subjects, and participation in ensemble performance.
Students earn the master of music degree following a two-year curriculum
or the Postgraduate Diploma, which is similar to the master's degree
but with fewer elective credits required for completion. The program
of study leading to the Professional Studies Certificate is designed
for accomplished performers already possessing a master of music,
a Postgraduate Diploma, or their equivalent.
Doctoral Studies
This program leads to the doctor of musical arts degree, with a
concentration in instrumental or vocal performance, or composition.
The curriculum is designed to prepare the candidate for a performing
career as well as for college and university teaching careers.
Special Programs
Our special studies programs include the Barnard College at Columbia
Cross-Registration Program, videoconferencing, foreign exchange
programs, outreach programs, Summer Professional Music Theater Workshop,
and annual symposia.
Precollege Studies
This program offers musical training to elementary and secondary
school students. The Precollege Division's highly regarded faculty,
specializing in child and young-adult pedagogy, train more than
500 gifted, precollege-age students in music performance, history,
and theory. This division holds classes, rehearsals, and performances
each Saturday during the academic year.
