Listed below are the prescreening/audition procedures as well as the various audition requirements/repertoire for each degree level.

Prescreening Procedures

All voice applicants are required to submit a CD for prescreening purposes, in order to receive an invitation to a live audition in New York City. The recording must include all of the repertoire as listed below. It is not required that the format be a professional or studio recording, but the sound quality must be as good as possible.

Undergraduate Prescreening Requirements:

  1. A work in Italian from the 17th or 18th century
  2. An English work (not a translation)
  3. A work in French OR in German

Graduate Prescreening Requirements:

  1. A work in English
  2. A work in German
  3. A work in French
  4. A work in Italian
  5. An opera aria *
  6. An oratorio aria *
    * Please note that six separate works are required for the graduate level, i.e. an aria in Italian should count as either your aria selection OR your work in Italian, but not both.

Doctoral and Professional Studies Prescreening Requirements:

A full-length recital from four contrasting style periods, which includes compositions in English, French, German, and Italian. The program should contain 60 minutes of music, and include no more than two operatic arias.

Audition Procedures

  • Live auditions are approximately 10 minutes in length (doctoral auditions are approx. 30 minutes in length). Applicants must perform all works from memory. Each applicant chooses a first work and the faculty will choose a second work from the audition repertoire list provided by the applicant. An accompanist is provided free of charge for all auditions. If applicants wish to rehearse with Manhattan School of Music's accompanist BEFORE their audition, rehearsal time and cost should be arranged between the two parties.
