Listed below are the prescreening/audition procedures as well as
the various audition requirements/repertoire for each degree level.
Prescreening Procedures
All voice applicants are required to submit a CD for
prescreening purposes, in order to receive an
invitation to a live audition in New York City. The recording
must include all of the repertoire as listed below. It is not required
that the format be a professional or studio recording, but the sound
quality must be as good as possible.
Undergraduate Prescreening
Requirements:
- A work in Italian from the 17th or 18th century
- An English work (not a translation)
- A work in French OR in German
Graduate Prescreening Requirements:
- A work in English
- A work in German
- A work in French
- A work in Italian
- An opera aria *
- An oratorio aria *
* Please note that six separate works are required for the graduate
level, i.e. an aria in Italian should count as either your aria
selection OR your work in Italian, but not both.
Doctoral and Professional Studies Prescreening
Requirements:
A full-length recital from four contrasting style periods, which
includes compositions in English, French, German, and Italian. The
program should contain 60 minutes of music, and
include no more than two operatic arias.
Audition Procedures
- Live auditions are approximately 10 minutes in length (doctoral
auditions are approx. 30 minutes in length). Applicants must perform
all works from memory. Each applicant chooses a first work and
the faculty will choose a second work from the audition repertoire
list provided by the applicant. An accompanist is provided free
of charge for all auditions. If applicants wish to rehearse with
Manhattan School of Music's accompanist BEFORE their audition,
rehearsal time and cost should be arranged between the two parties.
