Listed below are the audition procedures as well as the various
audition requirements/repertoire for each degree level.
Prescreening Procedures
- All classical flute applicants are required to submit a CD with
the application for prescreening purposes, in order to receive
an invitation to a live audition in New York City.
- Repertoire for the prescreening tape is as follows, and should
appear on the recording in the order listed:
- Two contrasting works (or single movements taken from full-length
works), representing two different styles and/or periods (accompanied)
- The second movement of either Mozart Concerto in D Maj.
(through m. 40) or Concerto in G Maj. (through m. 27) (unaccompanied)
- One movement of a sonata by JS Bach (accompanied)
- Two orchestral excerpts displaying a balance of technical
and lyrical playing (unaccompanied)
Audition Procedures
- Applicants who pass the prescreening portion of the audition
will be invited for a live audition in New York City.
- Auditions are approximately 10 minutes in length (doctoral auditions
are approximately 15 minutes in length). Each applicant chooses
his/her first work and the faculty will choose a second and possibly
third work from the audition repertoire list provided by the applicant.
An accompanist is provided free of charge at auditions. If applicants
wish to rehearse with the School's accompanist BEFORE the audition,
rehearsal time and cost should be arranged between the two parties.
Undergraduate Audition Requirements
- Two complete, contrasting works
- One movement from a J.S. Bach sonata
- Second movement of either Mozart Concerto in D Maj. (through
m. 40) or Concerto in G Maj. (through m. 27)
- Two contrasting orchestral excerpts
- Sight-reading
Graduate Audition Requirements
- One complete work (any period)
- A major work of the 20th century
- Second movement of either Mozart Concerto in D Maj. (through
m. 40) or Concerto in G Maj. (through m. 27)
- One movement from a J.S. Bach sonata
- Four contrasting orchestral excerpts
- Sight-reading

Requirements
A full-length recital from contrasting style periods including
a work from the 20th century, plus four orchestral excerpts.
