Listed below are the audition procedures as well as the various audition requirements/repertoire for each degree level.

Audition/Prescreening Procedures

  • Violin applicants to the Zukerman program must submit a prescreen CD of the classical violin prescreen requirements. All applicants that pass the prescreening round will then be required to prepare and play the classical violin requirements for the audition. Ms. Kopec will be present at the auditions in NYC, which will serve as the preliminary review for the Zukerman Program. Applicants who are successful at the preliminary audition in March (either by DVD audition or live audition) will then be asked by the Office of Admission to submit a DVD of the Zukerman Program requirements listed below for review by Mr. Zukerman. Please note: violin applicants who are not chosen for the Zukerman Program will be considered for the classical violin program.

  • Viola applicants to the Zukerman program must submit a prescreen CD of the classical viola prescreen requirements. DVD Requirements for Undergraduate and Graduate for review by Mr. Zukerman

Violin

  1. Bach unaccompanied sonata or partita (1st and 2nd movement).
  2. Mozart concerto III, IV or V (1st movement and cadenza).
  3. First movement of one of the following concerti:
    - Vieuxtemps IV or V
    - Paganini
    - Tchaikovsky
    - Other Romantic concerto

Viola

  1. Brahms Sonata in F minor, Brahms Sonata in E-flat Major, or Schubert "Arpeggione" (1st and 2nd movement).
  2. Bach cello suite (two contrasting movements)
  3. First movements of one of the following:
    - Bartok Viola Concerto
    - Bloch Viola Suite
    - Hindemith Der Schwanendreher
    - Berlioz Harold in Italy

DVD Requirements Doctoral and Professional Studies

Applicants for the Doctor of Musical Arts degree or Professional Studies Certificate must prepare a full-length recital of works from contrasting style periods.
