World-renowned trumpeter, composer, band leader and Blue Note recording artist, Terence Blanchard launched his career in 1980, joining the Lionel Hampton Orchestra, then Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. He has composed more than forty film scores and performed on more than fifty.
Anthony Roth Costanzo (MM ’08) is a critically-acclaimed countertenor who performs in opera, concert, recital, film and on Broadway, most recently in title roles with the Los Angeles Opera, the Finnish National Opera, and with the Berlin Philharmonic.
Violinist Glenn Dicterow is one of the prominent American concert artists of his generation. He was concert master of the New York Philharmonic for 34 years, and is the Chair of the MSM Orchestra Performance program.
Peter Duchin is a legendary bandleader and American pianist, the son of bandleader Eddy Duchin. He has served on the boards of Carnegie Hall, the American Ballet Theatre, and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.
Richard Gaddes is a leading opera company administrator who has spent most of his professional life guiding and raising the profile of the Santa Fe Opera and the Opera Theatre of St. Louis.
Thomas Hampson (Hon. DMA ’09) is one of America’s leading lyric baritones, a sought-after classical singer who appears world-wide in major opera houses and concert halls, and has made over 170 recordings.
Stefon Harris is a musician, composer, educator who was named “one of the most important artists in jazz” by the LA Times. He is a multi-Grammy Award nominee, eight-time Jazz Journalist Association award-winner, and was named leading vibraphonist in the 65th annual DownBeat Critics’ Poll. In July 2017, he joined MSM as Associate Dean and Director of Jazz Arts.
Marta Istomin was President of of Manhattan School of Music from 1992 until her retirement in 2005. She has six honorary degrees, and highest cultural honors from Puerto Rico, Spain, France, and Germany.
Lang Lang is one of the world’s leading concert pianists. He embraces new technology and innovation, bringing classical music into the 21st century. He is also an educator, philanthropist, and a U.N. Messenger for Peace.
Pinchas Zukerman is a violinist, violist, and conductor, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest violinists of the second half of the 20th century. He accepts gifted violinists and violists into his Pichas Zukerman Performance Program at MSM.
