Assistant Controller

Position Description

Title:  Assistant Controller
Department: Business and Finance
Reports To: Associate Vice President of Finance and Controller
Internal Contacts: Students, Registrar, Financial Aid, Student Affairs, IT, Human Relations, and other Administrative Offices
External Contacts: Parents, Vendors, Regulatory Agencies, Banking Institutions, Student Insurance, Student Meal Plans
Employment Status: Full-time; Exempt
Salary Range: $110,000 – $120,000
Start Date: Immediately

Position Summary

Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Finance and Controller, the Assistant Controller is a key contributor to MSM’s Office of Business and Finance. The Assistant Controller is responsible for the financial transactions and reporting of the School in support of the Business and Finance office and for the direct supervision of the Accounts Payable, Student Accounts, and General Accounting staff. This position requires a strong working knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting, and acts as liaison to other departments on all fiscal-related matters. The position also requires close attention to detail and the ability to work independently as well as with other financial staff and departments on campus.

Domains

  • Supervise the accounting staff of the Office of Business and Finance.
  • Support the Associate Vice President of Finance and Controller in the monthly financial reporting process, including account analysis and reconciliation.
  • Assist with the preparation for and support of the annual external audit.
  • Review monthly bank reconciliations and daily banking activity, including the preparation of weekly cash flow reports and taking necessary actions to comply with state and federal unclaimed property regulations.
  • Prepare quarterly sales tax filing for Campus Store sales.
  • Reconcile monthly Advancement fundraising reports with the general ledger.
  • Work with departments to facilitate compliance with policies/procedures, and educate users to create a solid understanding of acceptable methods and practices.
  • Assist with implementing and maintaining accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Serve as a power user of the School’s financial software system (Jenzabar EX), and provide system support for any implementation that affects Accounts Payable, Student Accounts, Payroll, and general accounting.
  • Perform other projects as assigned by the Office of Business and Finance.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with a concentration in accounting or finance required.
  • MBA and/or CPA preferred.
  • Minimum of five to seven years’ experience in a fast-paced business office.
  • Higher education experience preferred.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong understanding of and the ability to adhere to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Experience with accounting information systems required; knowledge of Jenzabar EX a plus.
  • Superior customer service is essential, including written and oral communication.
  • Professional and ethical work behavior with ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality.
  • Appreciation for a diverse work force and customer base.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently.
