Building Aide at Manhattan School of Music

Position Description

Title: Building Aide
Department: Facilities         
Reports To: Building Engineer
Supervises: Cleaning Supplies & Equipment
Internal Contacts: Building Engineer, other Building Aide, Facilities Coordinator, Building Manager, Director of Facilities & Campus Safety, staff & faculty as required
External Contacts: Security, exterminator, building service contractors, delivery persons, NYC & NYS Department personnel


  • Andersen Hall Maintenance, including repairs & cleaning of Administrative Offices
  • Replaces light bulbs and unclogs toilet as needed
  • Relocates office furniture, table, packages, water, supplies, and chairs as requested
  • Replenishes soap, hand sanitizer, sanitary products, paper towel & toilet paper dispensers; strips, waxes, and mops floors; Cleans windows & glass and spills as necessary; vacuums; polishes, dusts, etc. upon request
  • Performs minor electrical, plumbing, hardware, lock and carpentry repairs, painting and patching walls
  • Assists with garbage and snow removal and sidewalk cleaning when needed
  • Maintains an inventory of all supplies, tools, and equipment and submits order requests to the Building Engineer
  • Oversees Contractors, delivery personnel and any inspectors within NYC departments (police, fire, sanitation, building inspectors, etc.) in the absence of the Building Engineer
  • Supervises Custodial Contractor
  • Manages hard key database and cuts keys
  • Set up conference rooms and maintain inventory of furniture
  • Preform daily rounds of mechanical equipment and log/trend spaces
  • Handle security camera requests and review previous recordings upon request
  • Assist with any other maintenance related task for Facilities department
  • Manage loading dock and deliveries
  • Other tasks as assigned

Job Requirements:

  • High School Diploma
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Facilities Management preferred
  • 2 years of facilities and building system experience
  • Technical knowledge of building systems, contractual maintenance, construction, and related services
  • Proficiency with electrical, plumbing, and HVAC distribution systems
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and Local laws, ordinances, and codes relating to the operation and safety of facilities
  • Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel and scheduling software
  • Positive customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Experience working with computerized BMS systems
  • Certifications (boiler, standpipe, sprinkler) and Affiliations helpful
  • Upon hire, willing to become FDNY certified for S95 fire panel and S12 standpipe sprinkler
