The Manhattan School of Music Precollege Division is a full-day, audition-based Saturday program for talented students ages 5 through 18. The Precollege Symphony Orchestra Conductor is a multi-faceted position. The successful candidate must be able to combine his/her passion for music with a professional and enthusiastic approach that encourages young people to grow and progress during the academic year. The Precollege Symphony Orchestra is comprised of mostly high school students with an age range of 13- 17 years, and is one of four Precollege orchestras.

Domains

  • Conduct weekly Saturday rehearsals (2 hours in length) during a 30-week academic year from September through May.
  • Conduct three performances throughout the academic year.
  • Select appropriate orchestra repertoire that represents MSM’s Cultural Inclusion Values and is done so in consultation with the Precollege Director and in coordination with other Precollege conductors.
  • Participate in orchestra placement auditions.
  • Provide program notes when required for concert programs.
  • Prepare music with bowings as necessary.
  • Prepare excerpts for seating auditions.
  • Maintain timely and informative communications with the Dean and administrative staff of the Precollege.

Job Requirements

  • Expert conductor of full orchestra repertoire that is appropriate for high school-aged musicians and demonstrates a commitment to consistent performance of repertoire by underrepresented creators as well as works that have traditionally been categorized as part of the “canon”.
  • Experienced professional musician and educator with evidence of a successful track record in both areas.
  • Professional and ethical work behavior appropriate to an educational work environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and diplomatically with different constituencies, including staff, students, and parents.
  • Strong leadership skills, be punctual and organized, and maintain a good relationship with the administration, colleagues, students and parents.
  • Encouraging, inspiring, and engaging demeanor while demanding a high standard of excellence of orchestra members.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion teaching and/or conducting.
  • Possess a Master’s degree or higher in music or education, or have equivalent experience.
