Campus Health Nurse

Position Description

Title: Campus Health Nurse

Department:  Student Affairs

Reports To:  Dean of Students

Internal Contacts:  Students, Faculty, Staff

External Contacts:  Community Partners/Vendors, Medical/Mental Health Service Providers, Weill-Cornell The Center for the Performing Artist, USI Collegiate Resources Insurance, CHP Student Health Insurance

Employment Status: Full-time; exempt

The Campus Health Nurse serves as a full-time staff member working in collaboration with other Student Affairs Division and Counseling Center staff to enhance students’ experience by promoting health and wellness, supporting the development and implementation of health and wellness programming, partnering with community providers to increase access to health and mental health resources, and empowering students to be self-guided and well-informed consumers of health care services.


Leadership & Management

  • Develops and reviews policies and protocols for Campus Health & Wellness Office.
  • Manages Student Health Insurance Program.
  • Manages Student Health 101 online health resource and promotion of program.
  • Cultivates effective community partnerships to strengthen on- and off-campus health services, programming, and events.
  • Oversees and coordinates annual Health & Wellness Fair and annual Flu Clinic.
  • Conducts bi-annual ACHA-NCHA student health survey.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Assesses and manages students’ physical and mental health status.
  • Provides basic first aid and over-the-counter (OTC) treatment for minor injuries and illnesses.
  • Provides confidential health counseling.
  • Follows guidelines and protocols for the administration of OTC medicine and/or delivery of treatment as needed.
  • Coordinates and case manages students’ health needs to include referral(s) to comprehensive medical care services, counseling, and/or community resources; assists students with management of health insurance processes.
  • Complies with confidentiality requirements as set by HIPAA; FERPA; and federal, state and local regulations.
  • Coordinates MSM’s Physical Therapy Initiative by collaborating with the School’s once-a-week physical therapy provider.
  • Participates in weekly Student Affairs team meetings, monthly Wellness Coordination meetings, and Wellness Programming meetings.
  • Engages students, staff, and faculty in health promotion and education activities.
  • Fosters partnerships with students, staff, and faculty to strengthen health and wellness initiatives for the MSM community.
  • Maintains active involvement with one or more professional associations.

Administrative Duties

  • Maintains complete and accurate documentation of nursing care and follow-up delivered.
  • Administers and tracks referrals to Weill-Cornell The Center for the Performing Artist.
  • Tracks Campus Health & Wellness Office visits.
  • Reviews and modifies Campus Health & Wellness forms and documentation as needed.
  • Retains copies of Excused Absence and Verification of Visit forms issued.
  • Maintains accurate record of Campus Health & Wellness Office supply orders.
  • Completes monthly expense reports.
  • Reviews Alcohol and Drug policy, procedures, support services, and educational programs; updates report as needed.

Job Requirements:

  • Must hold a current NYS RN license; BSN-level prepared nurse preferred
  • Master’s or advanced degree in public health, health promotion, health policy, health education or CHES/CPH certificate highly desirable
  • 3-5 years of related experience in higher education setting preferred
  • Commitment to a public health model of health and wellness
  • Knowledge of musician and performing artist-related health issues helpful
  • Sensitivity to working with people from different cultures required
  • Experience working with international student population desired
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Self-motivated, outgoing, innovative
  • Team player with a sense of humor desired
