Fundamentals of Acting
Laura Sametz (MFA, NYU Tisch Graduate Acting Program) coaches young actors in New York City from all disciplines, including opera, musical theater, and dance. She has developed a technique which stresses the importance of the written text and the story the writer has written, helping her students to discover their own voices and what they want to say while staying true to the written word.
As an actress, Laura has performed in numerous Shakespeare, Chekhov, and other period plays, as well as in many contemporary works, including new plays by John Patrick Shanley, Joshua Sobel, Peter Weiss, and Leslie Lee. New York theaters in which she has appeared include the Public Theater and Shakespeare in the Park at the Delacorte, Manhattan Theatre Club, Playwrights Horizons, the HB Playwrights Theatre, and the Metropolitan Playhouse. She performed on Broadway at The Brooks Atkinson Theater in Cafe Crown as Eli Wallach’s daughter.
Regionally she has performed at Baltimore’s Center Stage, the Alliance Theatre, NY Stage and Film’s Powerhouse Theater, the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, George Street Playhouse, Williamstown Theatre Festival, and more. On television she has appeared in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, When I Grow Up (pilot), As the World Turns, New York News, and The Following. Her film work includes It Had to Be You with Cristin Milioti, Wayward Son with Harry Connick, Jr., and the short films Everything Is Ordinary and The Ride Home.
Laura has studied acting with Larry Moss, Ron Van Lieu, and Harold Guskin; Shakespeare with Nora Dunfee and Patsy Rodenburg; and the Alexander technique with Jessica Wolf. She will be teaching Fundamentals of Acting to the first-year students.
