Thomas Feng

Theory & Ear Training (Precollege)

Composer and pianist Thomas Feng is propelled by an insatiable musical curiosity and an enthusiasm for collaboration.

His introspective, lyrical compositions have garnered awards and recognition from such institutions as ASCAP (Morton Gould Award), the Pacific Musical Society, the UCLA School of Music (Hugo Davise Prize) and the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts (YoungARTS), and performances by Amalgama, Wild Up, the Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra, and the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra.

As a pianist, Thomas’s repertoire is principally modern and contemporary literature, including several works of his own, as well as new works by composer colleagues. Notable past engagements include summer festival performances at New Music on the Point and at the inaugural Yarn/Wire Institute, a multimedia collaboration with video artists Patterson + Reckinger, and incidental performances with Wild Up and Monday Evening Concerts. An avid collaborative and ensemble pianist, he has held the principal keyboard positions of the American Youth Symphony and the UCLA Philharmonia, and performed with countless chamber groups as a core member of Tactus (Manhattan School of Music) and Contempo Flux (UCLA). Most recently, Thomas became a member of the New York-based new music ensemble Amalgama.

Thomas graduated from UCLA with a BA in music composition, summa cum laude, where his primary teachers included Mark Carlson, Sean Friar, and Gloria Cheng, following formative pre-college studies with David Conte and Claude Monteux. He is currently pursuing an MM in contemporary performance at Manhattan School of Music, studying with Margaret Kampmeier, Christopher Oldfather, and Anthony de Mare.
