Manhattan School of Music (MSM), one of the world’s premier music conservatories presents an exciting fall season of high-level performances, including:

Two profoundly respected figures in jazz, Art Blakey and Louis Armstrong, are celebrated in a performance featuring artists who carry on the legacies of these musical geniuses.

MSM Distinguished Visiting Artist and trustee Leonard Slatkin (HonDMA ’13) and award-winning actor Alec Baldwin (HonDMA ’12) usher in Manhattan School of Music’s newest concert series, MSM Icons, celebrating acclaimed MSM alumni and trustees with exceptional international musical careers. The program will include works by Glinka, Fauré, Altschuler, and members of the Slatkin family.

Orchestra of St. Luke’s Principal Conductor Bernard Labadie (HonDMA ’18) has established himself worldwide as a leading conductor of Baroque and Classical repertoire, regularly performing in such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, and on the podiums of leading North American orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic. Included on the program will be Haydn’s Symphony No. 103 in E-flat Major.

November 8 – 10 | Various times MSM Musical Theatre presents Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
MSM Musical Theatre undertakes composer Stephen Sondheim’s and librettist Hugh Wheeler’s darkly comic, Tony Award-winning tale of love, murder, and revenge set against the backdrop of 19th-century London.

A celebration of the life and music of groundbreaking South African trumpeter and composer Hugh Masekela (1939-2018) who studied at MSM in the early 1960s. Featuring special guest artist Sean Jones on trumpet.

December 12 – 15 | Various times MSM Opera Theatre presents Mercadante’s I due Figaro
Long-forgotten until rediscovered by Maestro Ricardo Muti in 2013, Saverio Mercadante’s I due Figaro is a sequel to the plots of Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia and Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro. The opera buffa is a story of the love between Cherubino (now a celebrated colonel) and Inez, the daughter of the Count and Countessa d’Almaviva. All the usual suspects appear onstage, however the arrival of a dual Figaro and the constant presence of a wannabe writer add to the mixed-up shenanigans in this delightful work. Stefano Sarzani conducts; MSM Opera Theatre Artistic Director Dona D. Vaughn directs.
