The wearing of masks is optional inside MSM performance halls
Up to six of North America’s most promising young string quartets and special guests take part in a series of master classes to be taught by a faculty that includes David Geber, Nicholas Mann, members of the American String Quartet, Samuel Rhodes, and Mark Steinberg. On the concluding day of the Institute program, there will be a public performance at Manhattan School of Music showcasing each of the participating quartets.

The Abeo Quartet, formed at Juilliard in 2018, is winner of a First Prize and the Audience Favorite Prize in the 2022 Yellow Springs Chamber Music Competition for Emerging Professional Ensembles and of Silver Medals in the 2022 Chesapeake International Chamber Music Competition and the 2019 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. Abeo was selected to compete in the semifinals of the 2022 Banff International String Quartet Competition and was also a finalist in the 2021 and 2022 Young Concert Artists International Competition. Abeo is honored to be the inaugural Graduate String Quartet in Residence at the University of Delaware under the mentorship of the Calidore String Quartet.
The quartet has been featured in the Schneider Concert Series, Alice Tully Hall, The Kennedy Center’s Reach Festival with pianist Joseph Kalichstein, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s masterclass series with the Danish String Quartet, and on WQXR’s Midday Masterpieces. Abeo was also featured in Norway’s Vertavo Festival, performing seven Haydn string quartets and was in residence at the Glenstone Museum, debuting “Moonshot” by Alistair Coleman. In 2021, members of the Abeo Quartet were fellows at Yale University’s Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, coached by the Brentano, Emerson and Miró quartets. The quartet was among the International Program artists at the 2022 Music@Menlo Chamber Music Festival and Institute and additionally collaborated with pianist Shai Wosner, among others. Abeo has participated in the 2022 and 2019 Montreal International String Quartet Academy, studying with members of Quatuor Ebene, Meta4, Alban Berg, Takács and Artemis String Quartets.

Formed in the fall of 2022, the Aurelius String Quartet studies under the tutelage of David Geber at the Manhattan School of Music. Their respective long-standing passion for chamber music has previously lead them to work with members of the Alban Berg, American, Borodin, Borromeo, Brentano, Brodsky, Cooperstown, Danish, Ébène, Emerson, Escher, Hagen, Juilliard, Jupiter, Mendelssohn, Orion, Takács and Tokyo String Quartets.
The members of the Aurelius have also performed alonsides artists such as Jinjoo Cho, Ani Kavafian, Garth Knox, Lang Lang, Misha Maisky, Vadim Repin, Axel Strauss and more. Furthermore, they have appeared at ENCORE Chamber Music, the Heifetz International Music Institute, Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival, the Universität Mozarteum, MISQA, Music Academy of the West and the Taos School of Music, among others.
Respective highlight appearances include recitals in the Netherlands, Mexico, Spain and the US, as well as performances with the Primrose Ensemble, the Counterpoitn Ensemble, the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competiton 2017 Grand Prize Winner’ Mid-Western Tour and New York Times acclaimed performances at Carnegie Hall with the Sphinx Virtuosi. Other ensemble experiences comprise leading positions with the Mannheimer Philharmoniker, the Orquesta UNESCO Barcelona, the Taiwan Philharmonic and the Sphinx Virtuosi’s upcoming debut CD under Deutsche Grammophon.

The Balourdet Quartet, based in Boston, Massachusetts, is currently in residence at the New England Conservatory’s Professional String Quartet Program. The quartet received the Grand Prize at the 2021 Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition, as well as prizes in international competitions including the Banff, Paolo Borciani, and Carl Nielsen competitions. They were also awarded the Gold Medal at the 2020 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and the 2021 Chamber Music Yellow Springs Competition.
Highlights of the Balourdet’s 2022-23 season include appearances at Chamber Music Detroit, the Grand Piano Series in Naples, FL, NEC’s Jordan Hall, Merkin Hall, and Wigmore Hall. Summer 2022 also saw the Balourdet performing at festivals including Bravo! Vail, Music Mountain, and Strings Music Festival. Additionally this season, the quartet is thrilled to premiere a new commissioned work by celebrated composer Karim Al-Zand, made possible through Chamber Music America’s Classical Commissioning Grant.
The Balourdet Quartet was formed in 2018 at Rice University in Houston, Texas under the tutelage of James Dunham, Norman Fischer, and Cho-Liang Lin. It currently works primarily with Paul Katz at the New England Conservatory, as well as Miriam Fried and members of the Cleveland and Borromeo Quartets. The quartet takes its name from Antoine Balourdet, chef extraordinaire at the Hotel St. Bernard and beloved member of the Taos School of Music community.

Dyllis Quartet is a newly formed team in the summer of 2022 and was found with a passion for String Quartet. The name ‘Dyllis’ is a Latin word meaning ‘candid’ and Dyllis String Quartet plan to play music as its name with sincerity and harmony. An emerging string quartet, the Dyllis String Quartet is known for its unique-personal sound and various interpretations. The members of the quartet are violinists Jihyeon Kim and Haeun Yi, violist Junghyun Ahn, and cellist Sam Chung. Its members are being praised for their passionate, spontaneous playing and their powerful on-stage presence.
Violinists Jihyeon Kim and Haeun Yi have been playing String Quartet together for three years, were named Kumho Art Hall Young Chamber and semi-finalists of the Ysaÿe international music competition. Also they were invited Music in PyeongChang festival as string quartet academy.
Violist Junghyun Ahn participated in the master class of Boromeo String Quartet and played string quartet at the NEC Gala concert.
Cellist Sam Chung performed string quartet at the Greene Space presented by WQXR Station ,had an opportunity to get the CMS masterclass from members of the renowned Danish String Quartet and Brentano Quartet and played at the opening of the Instrument gallery opening at the MET Museum.
The Dyllis String Quartet plans to play diverse music by combining experiences of individual members and upcoming few months will be full of preparations for competitions and festivals including the International Mozart Competition Salzburg 15th Edition.
