Admission Blog: Meet Kiarri Andrews, Assistant Director of Admissions at MSM

Kiarri will be in the Chicago area November 13-16 meeting with students, high schools, and performing arts organizations. Meet Kiarri on the road, or connect with him virtually for all of your MSM-related questions!

Kiarri Andrews works with applicants to MSM’s Classical Piano, Winds, Brass, Orchestral, Percussion, Guitar, and Contemporary Performance programs.

You can connect with Kiarri and the rest of the admissions team at admission@msmnyc.edu.

Tell us a bit about your background in music.

My background is in Musical Theatre and I’ve performed Off-Broadway and regionally across the country. I’ve also worked in Admissions at various institutions for more than 7 years. I’ve loved music my entire life, and that love was passed down to me by my mother.

What do you love about MSM?

I love the incredible diversity here, and the 140 practice rooms (which is a CRAZY number!).

What do you feel makes MSM the best choice for someone pursuing a career in music?

At MSM, you not only get a world-class education in one of the best cities on the planet, but the environment is so friendly and supportive that you can legitimately find friends for life here.

What is a piece of advice you would give to students applying to music school?

The biggest piece of advice I can offer is to not wait until the last minute to finish your application! You will unnecessarily stress yourself out, and it’s not worth it. Start early, and do it piece by piece.

What do you love most about living in NYC?

Broadway (of course) and the array of restaurants and food.

Share a fun fact about yourself.

Living in NYC has given me a chance to bump into and have full conversations with almost all of my musical theater idols, including Brian Stokes Mitchell, Norm Lewis, Anika Noni Rose (who said I had an amazing smile!), Patti LuPone, Joshua Henry, and Megan Hilty.

What is your favorite spot on the MSM campus and why?

My favorite spot is Neidorff-Karpati Hall. It’s an absolutely stunning performance space.

Do you have a favorite Instagram page?

Right now, my favorite IG page is @embracingblackculture. It’s fun and hilarious and uplifting.

What is a song that you can’t stop listening to this year?

The song that I can’t stop listening to this year is ‘Don’t Start Now’ by Dua Lipa. The lady just makes bops!
