What Participants Will Experience

Classical instrumentalists participate in various large and small ensembles, including orchestra, sectionals, studio classes, woodwind ensembles, and an array of chamber groups.

Classical pianists participate in a diverse assortment of classes, including piano repertoire class, studio class, 4-hand piano, and a variety of chamber groups. An emphasis is placed on sight-reading, as well as opportunities to perform with other students.

Jazz instrumentalists and jazz vocalists participate in various large and small ensembles including jazz band, Latin jazz band, R & B ensemble, and various combos. All jazz students take classes in jazz theory, jazz history, and improvisation.

The musical theater and classical voice curriculum includes, acting, vocal coaching, dance, and performance techniques. Singers develop their vocal skills and dramatic interpretation, as well as gain valuable performance experience, as they rehearse and prepare for the summer’s culminating musical theater productions. Performances are fully staged with sets and costumes.

Composition majors participate in small group workshops and individual lessons. Additional classes include orchestration, arranging, and advanced music theory. There are multiple opportunities for student compositions to be performed.

All students have a private lesson each week with a MSM Summer faculty member and take a daily theory and/or ear training class. Performance opportunities take place throughout the summer in Manhattan School of Music’s state-of-the-art performance venues.

MSM Summer is supported, in part, by The ASCAP Foundation Irving Caesar Fund, Mari & Kenneth Share, and an anonymous donor; and by public funds from the New York City Council, Councilman Mark Levine.
