Manhattan School of Music's pre-conservatory training program for talented musicians aged 5 to 18, held on Saturdays during the school year.

As part of our commitment to the health and safety of the entire MSM Community, MSM has decided that the Precollege will continue in a remote learning format for Fall 2020.

MSM’s Precollege program gives talented students professional instruction and multiple performing opportunities in a supportive environment, as well as collaborative time spent with like-minded peers, many of whom become life-long friends and colleagues.

Students take part in either our Classical Program or our Jazz Program.

Instruction each Saturday throughout the school year includes a weekly private lesson and classes such as theory, ear training, composition, orchestra, chorus, and conducting. Students also take part in numerous performances held in our various recital halls.

Many graduates go on to attend world-class conservatories, Ivy League universities, and other prestigious institutions.

The Manhattan School of Music Precollege Youth Chorus presents My Shot from "Hamilton"

A message from the Youth Chorus Director, Jeanai La Vita:

“The Manhattan School of Music Precollege Youth Chorus, the youngest of the Precollege choruses, is comprised of 2nd through 5th graders who are string and piano majors. These choral arrangements of “My Shot” from Hamilton and “Imagine” are challenging with three- and four-part harmony and multiple solo lines. Although these students are not voice majors, I teach them to be strong, enthusiastic solo singers who come together as a mighty, young ensemble. We studied these poignant and timely pieces this semester in class as they related to social justice, inclusion, and standing up in the face of prejudice during a time when many of my Youth Chorus students were being harassed in their communities and schools over the Covid19 outbreak.

Due to the pandemic, we had less than 8 hours in person this semester and then concluded our semester remotely via Zoom. In addition to the musical preparation, our rehearsal time was focused on important, topical group discussions about the messages of these pieces. I am confident my students are passionate and expressive performing these two pieces, even under limited circumstances, because of our bonding class discussions. I am especially proud of how much we accomplished through our resilience and determination to present a meaningful, creative performance.”
