MSM Recording Arts offers professional audio and video recording, live streaming, and live sound support services for the hundreds of MSM concerts, special events, and student recitals each year.
MSM Recording Arts is part of the Orto Center for Distance Learning and Recording Arts. It features a digital multi-track and HD broadcast studio facility capable of recording events in all of the School’s main performance spaces, including orchestra and jazz ensemble concerts, operas, musical theatre performances, master classes, and recitals.
The Recording Arts staff wants students to leave MSM with a portfolio of professional audio and video recordings that represents their musical advancements over their course of study and serves to further their professional careers.
Studio tours, panel discussions, and workshops on recording and recording-related topics such as How to Make the Most Out of Your Recordings and Introduction to Sound Recording for Musicians are offered on an ongoing basis.
Stereo and multi-track audio recording and archiving of MSM concerts, student recitals, and private recording sessions.
HD video recording for student recitals, private recording sessions, and MSM concerts and events.
Many MSM concerts and events are livestreamed by the Recording Arts Department. Livestreaming is also offered for student recitals that take place in Greenfield Hall, Mikowsky Hall, Miller Recital Hall, Myers Recital Hall, and Pforzheimer Hall.
All livestreamed events are streamed on the MSM website at www.msmnyc.edu/livestream.
Recording Arts provides live sound mixing and amplification services for mainstage Jazz Arts and Contemporary Performance Program concerts in addition to many master classes and lectures.
Students may also elect to add live sound support for a fee for Jazz Arts or CPP recitals that take place in Miller Recital Hall, Ades Performance Space, and Myers Recital Hall.
We’re committed to delivering the highest-quality recordings to the students and community of MSM. All recordings of student recitals and private recording sessions are delivered digitally in full-resolution format via convenient download links.
Recording Arts designs and maintains all of the classroom audio systems for pedagogical use by MSM’s faculty.
Copies of recordings may be requested by those who performed on an MSM concert or student recital. The studio also offers audio media transfers and digitization from formats such as reel-to-reel tape, cassette tape, and DAT tape.
Manhattan School of Music performances, master classes, and concerts that are recorded each year are now available for listening purposes to the MSM community on The Orto Center’s cloud media platform — MSM Mediaspace — at mediaspace.msmnyc.edu. Many performances that are livestreamed can also be accessed on-demand at www.msmnyc.edu/livestream.
MSM Recording Arts maintains the expansive historical audio archive collection of Manhattan School of Music performances recorded since the 1950s. An archival digitization project is currently underway in conjunction with MSM’s Centennial Celebration that will preserve these recordings in a digital format.
MSM performances recorded by Myers Recording Studio are broadcast regularly on various radio stations, including WQXR and WWFM. MSM’s ongoing partnership with WWFM—The Classical Network—offers the opportunity for select student performances to be broadcast throughout the school year on the station’s program, Celebrating Our Musical Future.
Myers Recording Studio regularly produces recordings for commercial release, including opera and jazz performance recordings released on Albany Records and Jazzheads respectively. In addition, Myers Recording Studio produces a commemorative compilation CD each year featuring the many outstanding performances from MSM student ensembles.
