A five-day event July 20-24 bringing together percussionists from around the world for classes, round table discussions, concerts, and more.
The MSM Percussion Summit is a once in a lifetime event — With the performing arts and summer festivals currently on hold, this is a place for artists, students age 16 and older, as well as leading educators and performers, to gather during this historic “pause,” and renew our musical roots built on the multicultural history of our instrument.
The five-day event filled with revelations and discussions about the percussion world and beyond, is hosting more than 25 teaching sessions, five pertinent round tables, and will culminate in two concerts featuring MSM alumni and special guest artists and faculty.
The 2020 MSM Virtual Percussion Summit intends to draw together the global percussion community no matter the time zone, place of origin or time in life.

“I cannot recall in my lifetime when the “pause” button has been pushed in the lives of all peoples of the world. This pause button has hit the performing arts community more like a large red stop button. Yet this time of stopping and reflecting has also become a great equalizer by allowing professionals and students to relate anew.
Percussion Artist Steven Schick shared, “Suddenly, for the first time since the 1970’s I had no concerts and was back practicing in the garage. It occurred to me that perhaps the ‘practice of percussion’ might really be just that: practice”. And it’s that element that is similar to a student who is perhaps home with limited instruments.
Therefore, it’s time for a Summit. A time to gather around our instruments to express so much more than just music at a time when the world is in such upheaval. Jazz artist Stefon Harris said about this MSM Percussion Summit, “I am very excited for the world of percussion to be a bridge which can unite multiple communities (as it has done throughout history.)” And to connect communities also means, it’s time for a Summit.
Though the world seems to have stalled, we in our small world of percussion need to have a gathering, a Summit. In depth percussion presentations and discussions will take place daily in classes. There will be revelations within and beyond the percussion world in daily round table presentations. We have also planned an MSM Alumni Concert, as well as a diverse final concert.
The 2020 MSM Percussion Summit intends to draw together the global percussion community for 5 days no matter the time zone, place of origin, or time in life. While the world seems to have stalled, it is our time to review the bridges that can be built from the very foundations of the instruments we play, to the performers we are and can become.
Plan to attend. Be freed from your percussion isolation and join the rally at Manhattan School of Music’s Percussion Summit July 20-24.”
