Yu-Pin Hsu

Dr. Yu-Pin Hsu earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Music from Manhattan School of Music, where she studied piano with Dr. Arkady Aronov. She received the Piano Pedagogy Institute Certificate and a Norman Stanley Smith Piano Pedagogy honorable mention. After finishing her studies at Manhattan School of Music in 1991, she moved to Paris, where she studied music and French literature at the Sorbonne.

Yu-Pin Hsu has performed with the Juilliard Percussion Ensemble at Alice Tully Hall and in the Afternoon Chamber Concert series at Lincoln Center. She has given recitals in Taiwan, France, and New York. In 1993, she was given a full scholarship to the Waterloo Music Festival at Princeton University.

She earned a doctoral degree in Music and Music Education from Columbia University in 1997 and became interested in performing arts medicine. In 2000, she obtained a Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy from Columbia University.

Currently, Dr. Hsu is a senior occupational therapist at New York Presbyterian Hospital and the Vision Rehabilitation Projects Manager at Lighthouse Guild in New York City. She has appeared as a guest lecturer on topics regarding performing arts medicine (overuse injury and focal dystonia in musicians) at Montclair University, the Juilliard School, New York University, and the American Occupational Therapy Association conference (AOTA). She has also given multiple workshops and lectures in addressing “Low vision rehabilitation” at AOTA and at other professional meetings in the tri state area. Recently Dr. Hsu was interviewed on the topic of Injury Prevention for Musicians for the podcast “Greenroom Conversations”. This October she is invited by New York State Occupational Therapy Association to present “Music and motor function: playing piano to fine tune coordination.” at the Hospital for Joint Diseases at NYU/Langone Medical Center. This December she is invited by AOTA to present “Low vision rehabilitation” in Charlotte, NC.

Her publications include “Medicare Coverage for Vision Assistive Equipment,” Arch Ophthalmol. 2010, 128: 1350–57 and “Understanding Work-Related Upper Extremity Disorders: Clinical Findings in 485 Computer Users, Musicians, and Others,” Journal of Occupational Rehabilitation 2001.

She has been a member of the faculty of Manhattan School of Music since 2000.
