Award-winning composer, producer, educator, arranger, recording engineer, and bassist Harvie S is continually challenging himself and his peers, expanding the borders of musical direction. He has performed and recorded with a long list of artists that includes Stan Getz, Chet Baker, Dexter Gordon, Tony Bennett, Ray Baretto, Michael Brecker, Jean Pierre Rampal, Paquito D’Rivera, Gil Evans, Art Farmer, Mark Turner, Jim Hall, Mike Stern, Jerry Bergonzi, Lee Konitz, Dave Leibman, Joe Lovano, Pat Metheny, Paul Motian, Chico O’Farrill, Dr. Billy Taylor, Maria Schneider, Zoot Sims, Toots Thielemans, Ray Vega, James Williams, Phil Woods, and Louie Belson, among many others.
He can be heard on 21 CDs as a leader, 13 as a co-leader, and over 400 as a sideman: work that includes recordings with artists like James Brown, Kenny Barron, Chick Corea, Tom Harrell, Sheila Jordan, Steve Kuhn, Pat Martino, Wycliff Gordon, David Mathews, George Cables, Eddie Henderson, James Moody, Danilo Perez, Anat Cohen, Paquito DiRivera, The Manhattan Transfer, Mike Stern, Dave Leibman, John Scofield, Jerry Bergonzi, Dave Liebman, Yusef Lateef, and Grover Washington Jr.
His recording Going For It on High Note Savant Records features Mike Stern and Alan Dawson. Also released in October 2022 is Wondering on Dot time Records with Roni Ben-Hur and Sylvia Cuenca. He has two Duo recordings on High Note with Jazz master Kenny Barron, Now Was the Time and Witchcraft. Witchcraft was on the Jazz Week charts for 16 weeks and peeked at Number #1.
Harvie is also well known for his work with Alan Broadbent Trio and Jazz Master Sheila Jordan who he performed for 14 years Voice and Bass.Their last CD is called Yesterdays. In early 2022 like Minds was released as their 3rd Alan Broadbent Trio Recording which Harvie played bass, recorded and produced.
He is featured along with Ron Carter and Joe Lovano in the book Tasty Jazz Jams Volume 2 available in Amazon paper back or download.
Harvie S has performed as leader and/or sideman at such venues as the Blue Note, the Iridium, the Kennedy Center, Syracuse Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz, Detroit jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, Carnegie Hall, Yoshis, Toronto Jazz Festival, Berlin Jazz Festival, Saratoga Jazz Festival, JVC Jazz Festival, Lake George Jazz Festival, Moscow Jazz Festival, Tblissi Jazz and so many more.
Selected as Jazz Ambassador for the United States, Harvie S toured throughout Europe and Southeast Asia in this honored capacity.
A professor of jazz bass and ensembles at Manhattan School of Music since 1984, Harvie S has conducted workshops and lecture demonstrations all over the USA and world.
