Sherry Sylar

Orchestral Performance Program

Sherry Sylar, Associate Principal Oboe of the New York Philharmonic since 1984 and served as Acting Principal during the 2018-19 season.  In July of 2019, Ms. Sylar performed a concerto written expressly for her, the Pablo Furman Oboe Concerto, at the International Double Reed Society Convention in Tampa, receiving rave reviews for her performance.

During the Christmas season in 1989, Ms. Sylar was one of eight Philharmonic musicians chosen to perform in an international orchestra, led by Leonard Bernstein, to represent the United States as part of the Berlin Celebration Concerts to hail the dismantling of the Berlin Wall.  She has performed as guest principal oboe with the Boston Symphony, Chicago Symphony, St. Louis Orchestra and Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France.

Ms. Sylar’s first CD, Oboe Dolce, was released in 2013.  She is making plans to record a second CD in the upcoming year.

Having given master classes world-wide, Ms. Sylar is a renowned teacher.  This year, as part of the Philharmonic’s Global Education Initiative, she taught at Shanghai Orchestral Academy.
