Tell us about your background in music.

From a young age, I dedicated my time to music; playing the flute in the Portland Youth Philharmonic and transcribing solos on the Tenor Sax for jazz band — even eventually studying Musical Theatre in college at NYU Steinhardt! Working with MSM applicants is incredibly exciting for me as I truly appreciate the hard work and dedication it takes to be a classical, jazz, or theatre artist.

What is a piece of advice you would give to students applying to music school?

You may not realize this, but WE are so excited that YOU are applying to music school! We love getting to know who you are throughout the application process. While this may feel like an overwhelming and uncertain time, try to enjoy the process. Remember that you have a lot to offer the world, and all of the music schools you apply to are lucky to learn more about you!

What makes MSM stand out from other music schools?

MSM is unique in that you really get to experience the best of both worlds. Students get to start their professional career from day one in New York City by studying with incredible working artist educators, seeing shows, networking, performing, and soaking up the rich culture of NYC. Despite being in the busy city, our campus is in an incredible little college neighborhood up in Morningside Heights. We are surrounded by other colleges (Columbia and Barnard to name a couple…) and lush green parks. There are amazing food options, shopping and easy access to public transportation. You really do have it all at MSM!

Andersen Residence Hall, which is connected to MSM's main academic building.

What do you love most about living in NYC?

I love the vibrant history of NYC! Each city block is unique and every building tells a story. Even right on campus at MSM – part of our campus was built in 1910! Think about all of the incredible musicians who have come through our doors throughout the decades… and the incredible musicians still to come!

What is your favorite spot on the MSM campus and why?

MSM is surrounded by some pretty incredible restaurants, and my favorite local spot is an Italian restaurant called Pisticci! I’ve been eating there for 10 years now and I don’t think I’ll ever get sick of it. (Try the Fettucini Ai Funghi!)

Do you have a favorite Instagram page?

In my totally unbiased opinion, my favorite Instagram page is @Ruthietheshihpoo – hands down the cutest dog in NYC, and she loves to show her MSM Spirit! (Editor’s note: Emma is her human)

What is a song that you can’t stop listening to this year?

Beyonce’s entire Renaissance Album. After spending countless hours on plane rides and long-distance drives during recruitment season this year, I’m afraid to look at how many times I’ve listened to it!
