MSM alumni featured throughout the Met Opera’s 2023–2024 season

The Metropolitan Opera has announced its 2023–2024 season — which features many MSM alumni! Learn about the productions here.

Jake Heggie’s Dead Man Walking

SEPT 26 to OCT 21

The most widely performed new opera of the last 20 years has its highly anticipated Met premiere in a new production by Ivo van Hove with libretto by Tony and Emmy Award-winner Terrence McNally.

Mezzo-soprano Susan Graham (MM ’87, HonDMA ’08) stars as Mrs. Patrick de Rocher; she sang Helen Prejean in the opera’s 2000 premiere. Baritone Justin Austin (BM ’14, MM ’17) is also featured in the production.

Verdi’s Nabucco 

SEP 28 to JAN 26

SeokJong Baek (BM ’16, MM ’18) sings the role of Ismaele in Verdi’s Nabucco in his Met Opera company debut.

Anthony Davis’s X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X

NOV 3 to DEC 2

Anthony Davis’s groundbreaking and influential opera, which premiered in 1986, makes its Met debut. Mezzo-soprano Raehann Bryce-Davis (MM ’12, PS ’13) sings the role of Malcolm X’s sister, Ella, in this updated production with a newly revised, jazz-inflected score. Composer Anthony Davis was among MSM’s 2020–21 roster of Artist Scholars.

Mozart’s The Magic Flute —Holiday Presentation

DEC 8 to DEC 30

The Met’s family-friendly production of Mozart’s fairy tale returns, sung in English. William Guanbo Su (BM ’17) performs the role of “Speaker.”

Puccini’s Madama Butterfly

JAN 11 to MAY 11

Tenor Jonathan Tetelman (BM ’11), making his Met debut, sings the role of the callous American naval officer Pinkerton, while mezzo-soprano Eve Gigliotti (BM ’97) sings the role of the steadfast maid Suzuki.

Verdi’s La forza del destino

FEB 26 to MAR 9

Soloman Howard (MM ’10) sings the roles of both Leonora’s father and Padre Guardiano in Verdi’s La forza del destino.

Puccini’s Turandot

FEB 11 to JUNE 7

Franco Zeffirelli’s iconic production retakes the stage, with soprano Elena Pankratova making her Met debut as the legendary and lethal title princess, opposite tenor SeokJong Baek (BM ’16, MM ’18) as the prince who puts his life on the line to win her love. Soloman Howard (MM ’10) performs as Timur.

Puccini’s La Rondine

MAR 26 to APR 20

Soprano Angel Blue stars as the sophisticated French courtesan Magda opposite tenor Jonathan Tetelman (BM ’11) as Ruggero, an idealistic young man who offers her an alternative to her life of excess.

Terence Blanchard’s Fire Shut Up in My Bones

APR 8 to MAY 2

MSM trustee Terence Blanchard’s (HonDMA ’17) stirring drama returns following its landmark company premiere in 2021. Based on the book by Charles M. Blow.

John Adams’s El Niño

APR 23 to MAY 7

J’Nai Bridges (BM ’09) shares a starring role in this Met Opera premiere of John Adams’s acclaimed opera-oratorio, a dramatic retelling of the Nativity.

The production features soprano Julia Bullock and bass-baritone Davóne Tines with Ms. Bridges and fellow mezzo-soprano Daniela Mack taking turns to complete the principal trio.

Orfeo ed Euridice

MAY 16 to JUNE 8

Countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo (MM ’08, HonDMA ’22), an MSM alumnus and member of the Board of Trustees, stars as Orfeo, the mythic hero who ventures into the Underworld to rescue his beloved Euridice. The production of Gluck’s 1762 opera features exuberant choreography from the legendary Mark Morris and features members of his renowned dance group.
