MSM Faculty Focus:
Oboe faculty Sherry Sylar gives her tips for auditioning at MSM

Sherry Sylar, Oboist with the New York Philharmonic, recently sat down with us to provide some audition tips for oboe applicants.

What are the characteristics of a great audition?

Sherry Sylar: The key to a great audition is to present a beautiful sound, display musical character — no playing it safe! — and of course it must be in tune and rhythmical. But I always listen for the sound, control, and musicality first.

What do you love most about teaching at MSM?

Sherry Sylar: The students are positive, full of enthusiasm and initiative, supportive of their colleagues, and fun to be around.

What are some unique opportunities that MSM oboists receive?

Sherry Sylar: We have a wonderful reed room! There is great equipment available for the students to use, which saves having to make the purchase of expensive machines. The space offers a wonderful opportunity to exchange ideas, to get acquainted with fellow students, and to relax when the going gets tough. This year we are starting a Bach Aria Week in order to collaborate with vocalists, continuo teams, and a wonderful visiting Bach/baroque specialist, Raphael Fusco, an MSM alum! We also always present a studio recital for those students not playing a solo recital during the semester. I’m looking for as many performance opportunities as we can offer.

What are you currently listening to?

Sherry Sylar: I listen to WBGO, a local Jazz radio station. I love the variety of jazz they present. I’m way too critical when I listen to classical music; it is not relaxing for me!
