The 2022 Alan M. and Joan Taub Ades Vocal Competition for outstanding opera talent is taking place Wednesday, March 23 at 4 PM in the Ades Performance Space.
Of eight students nominated, five are taking part in this final round. They are Rosario Armas (BM ’20, MM ’22), Yerin Han (MM ’22), Jasmine Ismail (MM ’21, PS ’22), Hanbyeol Min (MM ’22), and Jouelle Roberson (PS ’22).
Held each spring, the competition features graduating MSM Vocal Arts students who are completing their formal studies and plan to build their careers after graduation.
These students exhibit outstanding talent and strong potential for careers in opera.
The distinguished judges for this year’s competition are Richard Gaddes Former Vice President of Opera America, Co-Founder of Opera Theatre St. Louis, and Former General Director of Santa Fe Opera; Melissa Wegner (MM ’05) Executive Director of the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program and the Laffont Competition; Afton Battle General Director of Fort Worth Opera; and Myra Huang (MM ’01), Head of Music for the Lindemann Young Artist Program at the Metropolitan Opera and Collaborative Piano Faculty Member at MSM.

Finalists were selected through a preliminary audition; all participants in the audition were nominated by their teachers at MSM. The Alan M. and Joan Taub Ades Vocal Competition is made possible by generous support from Joan Taub and the late Alan M. Ades, longtime friends and benefactors of the School. Mrs. Taub Ades is a former member of the Manhattan School of Music Board of Trustees.
