The borrowing privileges and policies on this page apply to college-level
and precollege students. Alumni should visit the Privileges
& Courtesies section of this site for information about
using the Library. Faculty and staff should contact the director
of library services for information about borrowing.
The policies on this page relate to the following topics:
Borrowing Privileges
Chamber Music Semester Loans
Course Reserves
Renewals
Holds
Responsibility for Library Materials
Fines and Replacement Charges
Can't Find It?
Borrowing Privileges
Your valid Manhattan School of Music ID acts as your library card.
Students may borrow circulating books and scores for four weeks;
CDs, DVDs, and other audiovisual materials for one week. Course
reserve materials and recordings of School performances may be used
within the Library only, for two hours. Reference books and scores,
periodicals, and Manhattan School of Music theses also may be used
within the Library only, but with no time constraints. While you
can help yourself to most print materials, as they are on the open
shelves, audiovisual materials, course reserves, and certain
books must be asked for by call number at the rear circulation
desk, located in the back near the listening room.
Chamber Music Semester Loans
Chamber music needed for ensemble coaching may be borrowed for
the semester. Ask for an ensemble loan card at the desk; this must
be signed by the coaching faculty member. The student who signs
out the chamber music is responsible for the return of all the parts.
Course Reserves
Course reserve materials are items assigned by teachers for the
general use of their class or studio. They may be used within the
Library only, for two hours. You can find course reserve in ManxCat,
the Library's computer catalog, listed by your teacher's name or
the course name. Request course reserves by call number at the rear
circulation desk, located in the back near the listening room.
Renewals
All 4-week and 1-week materials may be renewed. To do so, bring
the item to the circulation desk. You can renew for an additional
period unless someone else has placed a hold on the item, in which
case you must return it. Course reserve materials may not be renewed.
Holds
You can place a hold on any item that is listed in the catalog but
is not currently on the shelf by clicking on the "Request"
button and entering the barcode on the back of the School ID badge.
When the item is ready, you will receive an e-mail notice that it
is being held for you.
You will find many listings in the catalog for items that are on
order or “in process.” When you place a hold on such
an item — and you are encouraged to do so — we automatically
make it a “rush” item and try to get it to you as soon
as possible.
Responsibility for Library
Materials
The person who signs out a library item is responsible for its return,
complete and in the same condition in which it was borrowed, on
or before the due date stamped in the item. For chamber music, the
person who signs out a set of parts is responsible for the return
of all of the parts, together and complete. We do not accept returns
of incomplete sets or individual parts.
Fines and Replacement Charges
Due dates are stamped in each item. We send overdue notices to your
student e-mail account (if you don't have one, we send it through
the post); according to School policy, you are responsible for checking
your e-mail daily. We send these notices as a courtesy only; you
are responsible for keeping track of the materials you have checked
out. You can check your current circulation record by logging on
in ManxCat;
you will need to enter your name and the barcode on the back of
your School ID badge.
For circulating materials, the overdue fine is 15¢ for each
day the Library is open, except for CDs and DVDs, which are 50¢
per day (15¢ per day for precollege students). In addition,
there is a $1.00 charge for returning a CD without its paper sleeve.
The overdue fine for two-hour loans is 50¢ per hour. After
your third notification that an item is overdue, or if your fines
reach $10.00 or more, you will be blocked from borrowing until you
clear your record.
The replacement charge for an item lost or returned incomplete
is the current retail price plus $15.00 for binding and other processing.
The replacement charge for an out-of-print item is usually $50.00,
to cover the cost of purchasing, cataloging, and binding a new edition.
Can’t Find It?
If it turns out that the Library does not have something you need,
you should submit an acquisition request (see below); if the request
seems reasonable, we will try to buy the item. In the meantime,
you have other options:
(a) Make use of the many library resources in New York outside
of the School. Anyone who lives, works, or goes to school in New
York City can get a free library card for the New York Public Library,
which includes the Performing Arts Library at Lincoln Center. A
librarian can also write you a pass to gain access to (though not
borrowing privileges for) almost any other library in New York City.
(b) Fill out an Interlibrary Loan Form. Interlibrary Loan is a
service, free to you, through which we can obtain from another library,
for you to borrow, virtually anything we do not own ourselves.
