College Faculty:
Conducting

Maureen Hynes enjoys an active career combining her talents as conductor, cellist, and educator. Although she began her career as a cellist performing as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral player, her interest in conducting grew after being asked to create the String Ensemble at LIU Post where she was a faculty member. She was eventually asked to conduct the LIU Post Orchestra for which she created many special collaborations including “The Tango Project” and “East Meets West” with the National Taipei University of Education Orchestra.

Recent conducting engagements include the 2016-2017 season of the Queens Symphony Orchestra, the oldest professional orchestra in Queens. The programs included Masterworks Concerts, a Children’s Concert, and several concerts in parks. In 2024, she was invited to guest conduct the QSO on short notice, resulting in another successful engagement. Ms. Hynes is a frequent conductor for regional and All-State Festivals, has guest conducted the Rutgers Symphony Orchestra and conducted the LIU Post String Ensemble on tours in Italy and Ireland. She is an adjudicator for WorldStrides Heritage Festivals.

At LIU Post, Ms. Hynes was Director of Orchestral and String Studies and Professor of Cello. In addition to conducting the orchestra and string ensemble, she also co-founded the Pierrot Chamber Music Festival, directed the Merriweather Consort specializing in Renaissance music and created and directed the LIU Post Pre-College Music Program. She received the Adjunct Faculty Recognition Award for her contributions to the LIU Post Department of Music.

As a cellist, she regularly performs with American Ballet Theater, American Symphony Orchestra, American Composer’s Orchestra, the Westchester Philharmonic, the Bard Festival Orchestra, and the Queens Symphony Orchestra. She has participated in the Aspen and Spoleto Festivals and with the Bard Festival Chamber Players. Her work in New York has included sub work in many Broadway shows.

Solo and chamber music appearances include performances at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, Merkin Concert Hall, Alice Tully Hall, the Phillips Collection in Washington D.C., and the Kennedy Center. She has performed in Europe, Canada, Ireland, Korea, and Hong Kong. Currently a member of the Pierrot Consort, she also appears as soloist, chamber musician and faculty at Songe d’été en musique in Québec, Canada.
