Graduate Sarah Brownawell (BM ’17, MM ’19): “Reaching the Stars Together”

Watch the inspiring graduation speech by Manhattan School of Music voice major Sarah Brownawell (BM ’17, MM ’19) at our 2019 Commencement ceremony at The Riverside Church on May 10, 2019.

The mezzo-soprano was elected Commencement Student Speaker by her peers in MSM’s Class of 2019 to give the address on graduation day — which also happened to be her 24th birthday!

“In these formative six years at MSM, I have learned a lot about music, a lot about people, and even more about myself. Perhaps the most poignant thing I’ve come to realize is that we reach our highest potential together and not alone. It is through community, collaboration, and personal connections that we are most fulfilled and make our best art.”

MSM is a neighborhood, a house with a bunch of different families and departments cohabitating the same space. It’s more than just the wonderful discipline I am privileged to practice, it’s also the connections I’ve made in these halls that have made me want to come back day after day.
