The Musical Theatre program of Manhattan School of Music (MSM) presents a full-scale, 40th-anniversary revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street for three performances only, November 8–10.

Directed and choreographed by Ted Pappas, with music direction by David Loud, the production includes a cast of 31 actors, a live orchestra of 28 musicians, and an impressive multi-level set.

“We are truly excited to present this beloved, spine-tingling thriller in magnificent Neidorff-Karpati Hall at MSM,” says Liza Gennaro, Associate Dean and Chair of the MSM Musical Theatre program. “It’s unique in this day and age for audiences to have the opportunity to experience a production on this scale, with so many actors and musicians taking part.”

The MSM production also features original orchestrations by the legendary Jonathan Tunick, who is one of just 15 EGOT winners (recipients of all four major American entertainment awards — Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony).

The revival showcases the exceptional talents of the performers in MSM’s Musical Theatre program, the only musical theatre degree program offered by an independent conservatory in New York City. In May 2020, the program will see its first class of graduates receive their diplomas at the School’s commencement ceremony at The Riverside Church.

“We are truly excited to present this beloved, spine-tingling thriller in a production showcasing 31 talented actors, a terrific orchestra of 28 musicians, and an impressive multi-level set.”

About Sweeney Todd

Sweeney Todd is the chill-inducing story of Benjamin Barker, an unjustly exiled man who returns to London as “Sweeney Todd” to seek vengeance against the corrupt judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife. This dark, witty, Tony Award-winning tale of love, murder, and revenge is not for the faint of heart!

The original 1979 Broadway production of this classic Sondheim musical received nine Tony Award nominations, winning eight, including Best Musical and Best Score.

Over the last 40 years, Sweeney Todd has been revived and interpreted in many ways, on many stages, including two Broadway revivals, three London revivals, and productions in opera houses around the world. Tim Burton adapted the musical for a 2007 film starring Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, and it has been televised, performed as a ballet, and illustrated as a graphic novel. It has been recorded numerous times, including the original Broadway cast recording (featuring Angela Lansbury and Len Cariou), which was selected by the National Recording Registry for preservation in 2013.
