MSM Percussion Program Event Highlights for 2018-2019

Join us for a number of exciting public events this season for Manhattan School of Music’s renowned Percussion Program, as MSM celebrates its Centennial year.

All events are free of charge, and take place at Manhattan School of Music, 130 Claremont Avenue, NY NY 10027. Arrive early to ensure seating!

MASTER CLASS: JAN WILLIAMS (BM ’63, MM ’64) 3-5 PM, Bossi-Comelli Studio. The respected percussionist, composer, conductor and teacher is a leader in avant-garde and progressive music in the United States, and an alumnus of MSM, where he studied percussion under Paul Price. Lukas Foss, John Cage, Elliott Carter, and Joel Chadabe, are some of the many composers who have written music expressly for him.

MASTER CLASS: GLEN VELEZ (MM ’74) 3-5 PM, Bossi-Comelli Studio. This legendary four-time Grammy Award winner — and MSM alumnus —  is considered the founding father of the modern frame drum movement. He has brought a new genre of drumming to contemporary music with his own performance style, inspired by years of studying percussion and frame drumming in cultures around the world. Velez has collaborated extensively with artists ranging from John Cage, to Pat Metheny, Tan Dun, Suzanne Vega, to the New York City Ballet.

MASTER CLASS: NUNO AROSO, 3-5 PM, Bossi-Comelli Studio.  Born in Porto, Portugal and widely recognized as one of the most creative and active percussionists and solo percussionist of his generation, Nuno Aroso is particularly focused on the percussion repertoire from 20th and 21st centuries, and actively collaborates with numerous composers from the most varied aesthetic fields and parts of the world.

Highlights for Spring 2019

The MSM Percussion Program is pleased to host legendary percussionist, author and conductor Steven Schick, who will work with MSM students in a residency from March 22-27. Open to the public: A master class on March 22 in Bossi-Comelli Studio, from 3-5 PM.

Manhattan School of Music’s esteemed Percussion Ensemble celebrates its 60th Anniversary with a free concert in Ades Performance Space on Wednesday, March 28 at 7:30 PM. An evening of quartets performing works by PRICE, DESANTIS, MARTIN, TREUTING, COLGRASS, PEREIRA, CAGE, and TENNEY.
