What is Pippin about and what is special about this production?

Aidan: Pippin is a show within a show. It follows a young man on his search for purpose and meaning in life. Set in 780 A.D. during the Holy Roman Empire, the story centers on Pippin as he tries and fails to find his purpose. What he doesn’t realize is that his purpose is already waiting for him, it just takes the whole journey to discover it.

What makes this production unique is how movement and storytelling go hand in hand. Our director and choreographer, Lorna Ventura, brings a fresh and dynamic vision to the show, pushing the limits of what the ensemble can do physically and emotionally. The choreography is a standout element, and it’s been incredible to be part of this cast.

Our music director, Andrew Gerle, has also been instrumental in shaping the production. He not only unites us as a tight ensemble vocally, but he also helps us explore the deeper motivation behind every lyric and musical phrase. Every song in Pippin carries intention, and Andrew really brings that out in us.

You’re playing the title role of Pippin. How have you stepped into this character’s shoes? What has been the biggest challenge?

Aidan: Stepping into the role of Pippin has been one of the most rewarding challenges I’ve had as a performer. Vocally, it’s a demanding role, and this process has taught me just how essential vocal health is. Steaming, using a humidifier, and staying constantly hydrated have been lifesavers.

On the acting side, I focused on discovering the quirks in Pippin’s personality. I wanted his growth to feel gradual and authentic, not just tied to the big moments or musical numbers. I worked on making each scene reflect a shift in his journey, however small, so the audience can really track his transformation.

To stay connected to the material, I spent a lot of time listening to the 2013 Broadway revival cast recording. Whether I was at the gym, walking to class, or just at home. It helped me understand the arc of the story and the emotional beats of each song.

Why should people come see Pippin?

Aidan: People should see Pippin because it tells a deeply human story. Pippin is someone we can all relate to. He’s someone who tries again and again to find meaning and doesn’t give up despite failing. His journey is messy, emotional, and honest. Reminds me of myself.

Why did you decide to attend MSM?

Aidan: Manhattan School of Music had been on my radar for a long time. I was drawn to the Musical Theatre program because of the incredible faculty, many of whom are Broadway veterans.

Another big influence was my high school band teacher, who’s also an MSM alum. He had nothing but praise for the school and encouraged me to consider it seriously. Now that I’m here, I can confidently say it’s exceeded all my expectations. I’m so grateful and proud to be part of this program.

Name something from this universe you think Pippin would love!

Aidan: Pippin would love Instagram reels. He’d be fascinated by all the wild things people do online and probably try to recreate half of them! Honestly, if he had access to social media, I think he’d have a much easier time figuring out what his purpose is.
