Classes and performances in the MSM Precollege Jazz Program take place each Saturday during the academic year from 8 AM to 6 PM. The program is open to talented students age 12–18 who wish to grow their skills in jazz performance.
The jazz program is for intermediate to advanced students who are passionate about jazz and about developing their instrumental and improvisational skills.
The students in the MSM Precollege Jazz Program are generally already playing in their high school band — and in some cases in middle school bands — and are looking for a more rigorous and higher level program to increase their skills through working with great teachers and playing with other students who share their love of jazz.
“The jazz program in Precollege is intense, but it is also fun,” explains Ryan Kamm, MSM Assistant Dean for Youth Programs and Director of Precollege.
Students study a comprehensive jazz-specific curriculum. Each week students have a private lesson, ensemble rehearsal — either in a jazz combo or big band — along with courses in jazz theory and ear training. Each semester, the students take part in concerts held in one of MSM’s seven world-class concert halls.
“Students make friends and play music together under the guidance of our exceptional faculty — many have worked with artists such Ron Carter, Jimmy Heath, and Lady Gaga, for example. Charlie Puth is a proud MSM Precollege graduate!” says Dean Kamm.
The average Saturday consists of four core courses: private lesson, ensemble, theory, ear training that are spread out over the day. There is down time between each, either for lunch in the cafeteria or relaxing in the student lounge or to socialize with friends. The day can end with a late afternoon concert performance in one of MSM’s concert halls.
Each student has their own schedule. In addition to their weekly core classes, they may also take elective classes or lessons for a secondary instrument.
“Students in the jazz program come from all five NYC boroughs, and also from Long Island, New Jersey, Connecticut, and beyond,” explains Dean Kamm. “The majority of students are of high school age of about 14 to 18, with some advanced middle school students.”
“Many graduates of the Precollege Jazz Program go on to study at MSM or other conservatory jazz programs throughout the US,” he says. “The MSM Precollege Jazz Program is ideal for students who are passionate about jazz and want to learn from NYC jazz professionals — and make friends with others their age who share their love of music.”
