The Office of Student Life provides numerous opportunities for
students to develop leadership skills as they pursue their musical
dream. Student leaders at Manhattan School of Music work closely
with the office to enhance the wonderful community at Manhattan
School of Music. Students learn how to run meetings, listen attentively,
and communicate assertively. They participate in constructive dialogue
about policies and issues and contribute suggestions to make their
experience at Manhattan School of Music a great one. They also learn
how to coordinate events and socials for the student body to enjoy.
Students involved in leadership positions participate in one service
project a semester.
Student Council (SC)
The Student Council is an organized group of Manhattan
School of Music students who serve as a governing body that works
with the Office of Student Life to maintain and enhance the quality
of life for students attending the School. The mission of the Council
is to enrich and support student life at Manhattan School of Music
and to be an advocate for students. The Council sponsors many diverse
and exciting events during the semester and provides an opportunity
for students to develop leadership and event planning skills. The
Council coordinates communication from other student groups and
governing bodies and ultimately represents the collective voice
of the student body. The Council is often invited to serve on School
committees. All full-time Manhattan School of Music students in
good standing are welcome to join. The Office of Student Life, Room

Residence Community Council (RCC)
The Resident Community Council is an organized group of
Manhattan School of Music students who live in the G. Chris and
SungEun Andersen Residence Hall, and serves as a governing body
that works with the Office of Student Life to maintain a positive
quality of life for students who live on campus. The RCC plans events,
suggests policy improvements, and represents the points of view
and positions of resident students at meetings of the Student Council
and other School committees. The RCC offers various leadership opportunities
to Manhattan School of Music students living in the halls.
Resident Assistant (RA)
The resident assistants (RAs) are students who report to
the residence life director and director of student life. They work
to ensure the smooth transition of residents and orientation in
the residence hall, the School, and New York City. The RAs promote
an environment that is welcoming, respectful, and conducive to learning.
They coordinate many educational, service, and social events so
that students get to know one another and form valuable, enduring
friendships. The resident assistants enforce School policies, help
in emergencies, and refer students in need to appropriate resources.
Orientation Leader (OL)
The orientation leaders (OLs) are students who report to
the orientation coordinator and director of student life. The OLs
coordinate events during orientation week and family and friends
weekend. They provide assistance to new students and help to welcome
them to Manhattan School of Music, helping students and parents
navigate the start of their experience here.
Student Organizations
There are several student organizations that work with
the Office of Student Life to provide opportunities for community
development among Manhattan School of Music students. Each student
organization is organized by students with common interests. The
students register their group with the Office of Student Life at
the start of each academic year. Groups are open to full-time Manhattan
School of Music students in good standing. Some of the student organizations
in the past have been the: International Student
Organization, Korean Students' Association, Lesbian-Gay-Bisexual-Transgender
Union, Graduate Social Committee, and the Pan-African Students Union. Students
are invited to initiate and register new student organizations in
the office of student life.
